9 Athletes Earn Weekly Conference Honors

PORTLAND -- Nine athletes in four sports -- volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer and cross country -- have earned Red Lion Player of the Week honors for the period Aug. 30-Sept. 5, the CCC office announced Monday.

This week's Red Lion Player of the Week honorees:

Volleyball

Hitter – Southern Oregon’s Megan Bartling, a 6-2 junior middle blocker from Medford, Ore., was named the Red Lion Hitter of the Week. Bartling hit .513 with 23 kills (3.83 per set) and committed just three errors to lead the No. 13 Raiders to CCC sweeps of Warner Pacific and Concordia. Bartling also registered 10 blocks as SOU improved to 5-2 (2-0 CCC). Honorable mention: Anu Akamine, Northwest; Sarah Harris, College of Idaho; Jessica Lea, Eastern Oregon; Sam Kolakowski, Warner Pacific; Megan Christensen, Oregon Tech; Chandra Baskoro, Corban; Raluca Dinca, Concordia.

Setter – Southern Oregon’s Lindsey Stone, a 5-9 senior from Ashland, Ore., was named the Red Lion Setter of the Week. Stone, a two-time CCC Player of the Year, averaged 11.8 assists (71 total) and guided the Raiders to a .311 attack percentage in sweeps of Warner Pacific and Concordia. Stone also had six kills, three blocks and three digs for the No. 13 Raiders. Honorable mention: Lauryn Ernster, Northwest; Madie Machurek, College of Idaho; Emily Sampson, Eastern Oregon; Cori Wallace, Northwest Christian; Lindsay Mangan, Concordia; Sarah Svedin, Oregon Tech; Karisa Calderon, Corban.

Libero – College of Idaho’s Whitney Owen, a 5-11 senior from Caldwell, Idaho, was named the Red Lion Libero of the Week. Owen totaled 41 digs, an average of nearly seven per set, as the No. 16 Yotes swept Northwest Christian and Corban at home. C of I improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the CCC. Honorable mention: Renee Yomtob, Southern Oregon; Kaitlyn Duncan, Eastern Oregon; Bridget Marasigan, Northwest Christian; Aubrie Concannon, Concordia; Hannah Brewster, Oregon Tech; Bethany Durre, Corban.

Men’s Soccer

Offensive – Oregon Tech’s Ashton Betts, a 6-0 freshman midfielder from Portland, Ore., was named the Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week. Betts had two goals and one assist as the Owls defeated George Fox 3-0 in Newberg. Honorable mention: Chris Longi, Northwest Christian; James Kerr, Northwest; Facundo Dipascuale, Concordia; Tarik Subasic, Warner Pacific; Gus Bermudez, Corban.

Defensive – Northwest Christian’s Nick Kratzke, a 6-2 sophomore goalkeeper from Edmonds, Wash., was named the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week. Kratzke registered 14 saves on 17 shots in helping the Beacons to a 2-1 week. He became NCU’s single-season wins leader (3). Honorable mention: Joe Galbraith, Northwest; Evan Denmark, Concordia; James Myrvold, Corban.

Women’s Soccer

Offensive – College of Idaho’s Macy Egerman, a 5-4 junior forward from Boise, Idaho, was named the Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week. Egerman had a pair of goals and an assist in a 5-0 victory over Great Falls to highlight a 2-0 week for the No. 21 Yotes. Honorable mention: Mauriana Gonzalez, Eastern Oregon; Crystal Foster, Oregon Tech; Rileigh Mankin, Corban.

Defensive – Southern Oregon’s Jessica Kuehlwein, a 5-8 junior goalkeeper from Oregon City, Ore., was named the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week. Southern Oregon posted a 2-0 record during the week, recording shutout victories over William Jessup and Linfield. Kuehlwein totaled 13 saves, including 11 in the win over Division III foe Linfield. Honorable mention: Jordan Holmes, Northwest; Melissa Holmes, College of Idaho; Lauryn Helmers, Concordia; Alexis Beattie, Corban.

Cross Country

Men – Warner Pacific’s Karim Shakalia, a senior from Troutdale, Ore., was named the Red Lion Runner of the Week after setting a course record (16:25) across 5,000 meters and winning the Corban Invitational in Salem. Shakalia posted his first collegiate victory in helping lead the Knights to the team title. Honorable mention: Andrew Hugill, College of Idaho; Taylor Adrian, Corban.

Women – Corban’s Christi Schmitz, a freshman from North Pole, Alaska, was named the Red Lion Runner of the Week after helping lead the Warriors to the team championship at the fourth annual Corban Invitational in Salem. Schmitz clocked a winning time of 11:52 over the 3,000-meter course to win the individual crown by more than nine seconds. Honorable mention: Sora Klopfenstein, College of Idaho.
