Big Second Half Lifts Great Falls Past Coyotes

CALDWELL, Idaho - Alex Martinez scored a goal and assisted on two others, as the University of Great Falls defeated The College of Idaho, 3-1, in an NAIA men’s soccer contest at Simplot Stadium.
Martinez had a nice through-ball to Ryan O’Neil in the 66th minute, who blasted a left-footed shot into the upper right corner of the goal to break a 1-1 tie, as the Argonauts (4-1-1) won for the first time ever against the host Coyotes (0-1)
UGF got on the board in the 14th minute, as Martinez lofted a corner kick to the far post, with David Jimenez flicking home the counter. The Yotes would get a lucky-break in the 17th minute, as the Argos tried to clear a ball from the box, but a defender headed it into The C of I goal, with the own goal tying the score at 1-1.
Martinez would get in the scoring act in the 75th minute, as he touched home a rebound off an O’Neil shot to cap the scoring.
After a fairly even first half, UGF dominated play in the final 45 minutes, controlling the majority of the possession and holding a 9-2 shot advantage – and just one shot on goal.
The Yotes return to action on Friday, traveling to Nampa for a 6 p.m. meeting with rival Northwest Nazarene.
