BOX SCORE
NEWBERG, Ore. – The best start in program history continues, as Corban's women's soccer team extended it season-opening winning streak to four games Tuesday night with a 2-0 win over NCAA Division III member George Fox under the lights at the all-new Austin Sports Complex Soccer Field.
Freshmen Audrey Sullivan (Puyallup, Wash.) and Tera McDonough (Boise, Idaho) each scored a goal, as Sullivan added her team-leading third goal of the season in the first half before McDonough netted her first collegiate goal with six minutes remaining in the game.
After battling to a pair of scoreless ties with Cascade Collegiate Conference members Northwest and Warner Pacific, George Fox could not overcome the high octane offense that Corban provided with the Warriors unleashing 23 shots compared to the Bruins' three.
Sullivan would team with sophomore Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) in the 34th minute for the eventual game-winner, as Tsugawa started the play with a cross from the left side onto the awaiting foot of the first-year Warrior. Without hesitation, Sullivan deposited the ball into the back of the net from five yards out for the early lead.
The Warriors' one-goal lead would hold through halftime, as Corban extended its lead to two goals in the 83rd minute thanks to a goal by McDonough off a combo assist from Tsugawa and sophomore Brittany Bowman (Shelton, Wash.). The aforementioned assist duo would get the ball to McDonough, who rifled a shot from 10 yards out into the left corner for her first collegiate score.
For the third straight game, freshman goalkeeper Alexis Beattie (Brea, Calif.) needed to make only one save en route to picking up the victory. George Fox's net-minder, Alyssa Montero, recorded a game-high seven saves but could not come away with the victory, as Kassie Vanderkwaak unleashed two of the Bruins' three shots on the night.
With tonight's result, Corban improves to a perfect 4-0-0 on the season and George Fox falls to 0-1-2 in 2010. The Warriors will return to the field on Friday, September 10th, against Golden State Athletic Conference member Fresno Pacific in Game #2 of the Phoenix Inn/Corban Classic beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
