Eagles Pull Away to Defeat Concordia

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University had five players in double figures as they defeated Concordia University, 90-79, in Cascade Conference play tonight.

 

Concordia jumped out early to a 20-15 lead in the first 12 minutes of the half, but a 3-pointer by NU’s Ahmaad Cook cut the Cavs’ lead to 23-20 with 10:28 on the clock. Cook followed that with a steal and pass to a streaking Greg Peters for a layup to make it, 23-22, 19 seconds later. Senior Daley Landon’s 3-pointer would put Northwest ahead, 25-23, but a tip in by CU’s Adam Herman would tie the score at 25-25 at the 9:22 mark. With NU leading, 35-29, with 6:37 to go in the half, Concordia would go on an 11-4 run to take a 40-39 lead (3:56). But back would come Northwest to outscore the Cavs, 9-3 in the final 3 minutes of the half to take a 46-43 lead into the locker room after Tyson Christie’s steal and layup with 40 seconds to go.

 

The second half would remain close until Northwest would take a 59-51 lead on a Christie 3-pointer with 12:59 to go in the game. A back door cut and pass by Ahmaad Cook would lead to a Christie dunk to put NU up 61-51 at the 11:46 mark. Concordia would cut into the lead and Jourdan Sweeney’s jumper with 9 minutes to go would bring the Cavs to within five, 63-58. NU would then go on an 8-0 run as Rich Skillman would sink his free-throw to complete a 3-point play after being fouled and putting in the layup to make it 71-58 Northwest with 7:07 to go. A rebound by Jordan Call and pass ahead to Skillman for the dunk would give the Eagles their largest lead at 84-70 with 1:13 to play. NU would make good 6 of 8 from the free-throw line to close out the game.

 

Tyson Christie (Sr., Sherwood, Ore.) led Northwest U. (13-5, 5-4 CCC) with 19 points and 6 assists. Junior Rich Skillman (Everson, Wash.) had 16 points and 4 assists; senior guard, Daley Landon (Waterville, Wash.) scored 15 points; junior Jordan Call (Kirkland, Wash.) score 13 points (4 assists); and 6-8 senior Greg Peters (Belmont, St. Vincent) contributed 19 points and had 7 rebounds. NU shot 50% on the night and 82% from the free-throw line (14-17). NU registered a team high 27 assists for the game.

 

Concordia (6-13, 1-8 CCC) was led by freshman Adam Herman with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Kevan West added 15 points and Jourdan Sweeney came off the bench to score 14 points for the Cavaliers. CU shot 54% from 2-point range and 43% from beyond the 3-point arc, but converted only 43% of their free throws (10-23).
