EUGENE, Ore. – The Northwest Christian University women’s basketball team continued their mid-season resurgence, knocking off Eastern Oregon University for the first time in school history, claiming a 66-61 victory. The win also broke a 15-game losing streak that the Beacons had at home in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.
It was the Mounties who established an early presence, leading by as many as six points during the early goings of the first half. The Beacons ralled to tie the game, 21-21 with 8:32 to go in the half on a layup from Martha Taylor and took their first lead of the night on their next possession as Jackie Cunningham took one to the hole. The senior Post scored the next four points for NCU as well as the Beacons mounted a 31-25 lead. NCU would remain ahead at the intermission, 39-33.
The Beacons showed their resilience in the second half, as their lead swung from as many as eight, down to as many as two in the early goings. Eastern Oregon, for their efforts, came all the way back to tie the contest, 52-52 with 8:30 left in the game, but Northwest Christian never surrendered their lead, and were able to claim their first home CCC victory since February 6, 2009.
Northwest Christian (6-12, 2-6 CCC) was led by senior Hope Williams (pictured), scoring 16 points along with eight rebounds. Lori Renner and Sheena Alexander added eleven points each. Aly Bruns led the Beacons with five assists and Taylor finished her night with five points and six rebounds off the bench. NCU shot 46% in the game, including a 3-for-4 clip from three-point range.
Eastern Oregon (11-6, 3-5) was led by Rosebud Guthrie’s 15 points. Kyle Miller and Kelsea Hurliman scored twelve points each with Hurliman adding a game-high six assists. Alyssa Garro came off the bench to add ten points and eight rebounds, shooting 4-for-4 from the field.
NCU will be back in action on Saturday, playing host to The College of Idaho at 7:30 pm.
