Miller Leads Corban to Upset Win Over C of I

SALEM, Ore. – Senior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) put together an all-around game with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and a game-high six assists, as she helped lead Corban's women's basketball team to a upset win over nationally-ranked The College of Idaho, 71-60, Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Miller was aided offensively by junior Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) with a team-high 20 points, while sophomore Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) tallied 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Along with Miller and Bennett, Steigleman pulled down five rebounds to go along with three each by junior Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) and freshman Alison Evans (Canby, Ore.).
In the opening half, Corban fell behind in the opening minute (2-0) before using a 9-0 run over a span of three-plus minutes to take control of the game. Following a three-pointer by Evans at the 15:38 mark that gave Corban a seven-point lead (9-2), the host Warriors methodically pushed their lead to as much as 19 points (35-16) after a three-pointer by sophomore Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) with 3:11 on the clock. The College of Idaho would cut Corban's lead to 12 (35-23) thanks to a Nicole Gall three-pointer before Miller closed out the scoring in the first half via a driving lay-in with two seconds left for a 37-23 Warrior lead at intermission.
Over the final twenty minutes, The College of Idaho could only get to within 11 points on two seperate occasions that included the opening 30 seconds after another Gall three-pointer that brought the visiting Lady 'Yotes deficit to 37-26. Corban would once again slowly build its lead to 21 points (61-40) thanks to a Bennett lay-in with 7:34 left before the Warriors settled for an 11-point win (71-60) marking its second straight win over C of I at home.
The visiting Lady 'Yotes were led by CCC preseason Player of the Year Gall with a game-high 36 points on 11-for-27 shooting from the field that included a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line. Gall was the only C of I to tally more than eight points, as Dayne Drager provided eight points off the bench. Katelin Shannon grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for C of I, while Diamond Mitchell handed out a team-best three assists.
As a team, Corban shot a combined 28-for-55 (50.9%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-11 (63.6%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 8-for-13 (61.5%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, The College of Idaho was a combined 19-for-70 (27.1%) from the field that included an unbelievable 8-for-33 (24.2%) in the first half. The Lady 'Yotes were also 8-for-21 (38.1%) from long distance and 14-for-23 (60.9%) at the charity stripe.
With tonight's win, Corban improves to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in Cascade Collegiate Conference contests. Meanwhile, The College of Idaho falls to 10-8 and 5-3 in league games. The Warriors will return to the floor tomorrow night – Saturday, January 15th – against the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
NOTE: During halftime of tomorrow night's women's basketball game, Corban's Department of Athletics will be recognizing its 2011 Warrior Hall of Fame inductees that will be enshrined in history during an afternoon ceremony prior to the men's and women's double header against Eastern Oregon.
