EUGENE, Ore. – The Beacons committed a season-low 11 turnovers and overcame a huge rebounding deficit to win their third straight game on Friday night, knocking off Evergreen State 75-60.
Things started slow for the Beacons as Evergreen jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 17:18 remaining. From there, however, NCU went on a 14-1 run over the next seven minutes to take a 16-9 lead with ten minutes to go. Evergreen finally got another field goal, and then a few more, eventually climbing back into a tie, 17-17. The teams traded a number of leads and the Geoducks looked to be going into the intermission with a three-point advantage, but with seven seconds remaining, Katey Monteith drained an open three-pointer and gave the Beacons a 33-33 tie at the break.
NCU carried that momentum into the second half, busting out to an 11-point lead as they went on a 13-2 run to open the frame. Evergreen wouldn’t get any closer than eight points the rest of the way, as the Beacons held ESC to 26% shooting in the second half.
The Beacons (8-12, 4-6 CCC) well-balanced attack featured four players in double-figures, led by 16 from Sheena Alexander (pictured), who hit a trio of three-pointers. Hope Williams followed with 14 points and 8 rebounds and Lindsey Shearer finished a strong evening with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Aly Bruns added ten points, along with a game-high five assists. Monteith finished with four points and two assists.
Evergreen State (4-13, 2-8) was led by Vanessa Caskey, scoring 12 points. Shavon Tate and Shekia Hill added eleven points each and Danielle Swain scored eight points and had a game-high 15 rebounds before fouling out with just over five minutes remaining in the game. The Geoducks out-rebounded NCU on the night, 53-36.
