Southern’s 12 points were the fewest points EOU has given up in a half since Walla Walla University scored six points in the second half of an Eastern 93-21 win on Oct. 27, 2009. The last time the Mountaineers gave up that few of points in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game was on Feb. 22, 2007 when EOU allowed 11 first half points in a 53-34 win over Oregon Tech.
A Taylor Stewart free throw with 4:25 left in regulation gave Eastern its largest lead of the game, 64-28. The game featured zero ties and no lead changes. Southern Oregon received little trouble from the Mountaineers on Dec. 17 earlier this season when the Raiders won, 69-53. In that game, EOU had a pair of two-point leads to begin the game, and then forced three ties early in the contest. But, the game belonged to Southern.
Eastern outscored SOU 22-7 in points off of turnovers, 28-16 in points in the paint, 20-6 in second chance points, and 20-4 in fastbreak points. Each team finished with 19 points off of their bench. The Mountaineers had 22 assists to Southern’s four. Both teams committed 16 turnovers. Eastern Oregon outrebounded SOU, 49-35.
Smith led the Raiders with 11 points. Celonna Arrington came off of the bench to grab a team-high six rebounds. SOU was held to 23 percent shooting from the field and 2 of 18 from behind the arc. Southern Oregon was 7 for 15 from the free-throw line. The Mountaineers were 41 percent from the field, 11 of 29 from three-point range, and 8 for 10 from the free-throw line.
EOU travels to Warner Pacific College (11-9) (5-5) Friday for its next game. Tipoff against the Knights is schedule for 5:30 p.m. with live video and stats on EOUSports.com. WPC cruised past Concordia at home, 88-54, on Jan. 21. It was the Mountaineers that were victorious in an earlier season matchup against Warner Pacific, 67-62, in La Grande on Dec. 31.
