Bench Helps Corban Defeat Evergreen State

SALEM, Ore. – A 6-0 run at the end of the first half along with 18 second half points by the Warriors' bench helped lead Corban's women's basketball team to a 63-51 victory over The Evergreen State College on Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Corban's bench was led in scoring by sophomore Christy Mosier (Bend, Ore.) with eight points, while senior Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.) provided seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) would lead all Warrior scorers with 13 points, while sophomore Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) and junior Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) added nine and eight points respectively. Harter was aided on the boards by Steigleman with six rebounds to go along with a team-high four assists by sophomore Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.).
The game began on a snail's pace, as neither team cracked the double-digit point mark until the 10:21 mark when Corban scored its 11th point via a three-pointer by Bennett to secure a four-point lead (11-7). Evergreen would fight back to take a slim one-point lead (19-18) via a 12-7 run before Corban closed out the opening half on a 6-0 run that ended with a free throw by sophomore Ashlyn Roos (Salem, Ore.) giving the host Warriors a 24-19 lead at halftime.
Evergreen would come out of the locker room and quickly re-took the lead (32-30) thanks to a 13-6 run over a span of four-plus minutes. Corban would then use a 9-2 run en route to earning a five-point lead (39-34) following a Buhler lay-up with 11:10 remaining. The visiting Geoducks would storm back to tie the game for the fourth and final time at 39-all before Corban used an 18-7 run that resulted in an 11-point lead (57-46) after back-to-back free throws by Steigleman with 95 seconds on the clock. Timely free throw shooting over the game's final minute would help Corban secure the win (63-51).
Danielle Swain led all scorers with 22 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the field before fouling out, while LaTrina Woods was the only other Evergreen player in double figures with 11 points. Swain also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Geoducks, while Woods handed out a game-high five assists.
As a team, Corban shot 20-for-61 (32.8%) from the field to go along with a 5-for-16 (31.3%) showing from behind the three-point arc and an 18-for-31 (58.1%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Evergreen was a combined 20-for-61 (32.8%) from the field, 4-for-14 (28.6%) from long distance, and 7-for-18 (38.9%) at the charity stripe.
With tonight's result, Corban improves to 12-9 overall and 7-4 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Evergreen falls to 4-14 overall and 2-9 in league play. The Warriors will be back in action on Friday, January 28th, when they travel south to Ashland to take on the Raiders of Southern Oregon beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside McNeal Pavilion.
