SEATTLE—Entering the meet with 11 total qualifiers for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships,  Concordia University added another eight marks to their season haul at the UW Invitational held at the Dempsey Indoor on the campus of the University of Washington on Jan. 28-29.

The Cavalier women accounted for six of the marks as Katherine Tripp, Alice Taylor, Lauren Moran and the squad’s distance medley relay team hit automatic status combined with provisional performances from Eunice Makinde and Dominique Jacoy.
On the men’s side, Eric Whalen hit the auto standard in the shot put and Branko Djuricic went provisional in the high jump.
“Good to get another handful of qualifiers in various events with a few new faces,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “We have a few left that haven’t competed yet so we will continue to add depth.”
With an automatic national qualifier already to her credit in the 3,000, recent cross Country All-American Alice Taylor easily cruised to the same benchmark in the 5,000 with a 17:27.17 to finish in fifth place overall. Taylor’s mark fell shy of her 17:09.49 school record but fell well ahead of the 18:22.50 ‘A’ barrier.
In the mile, Andria Scheese lowered her ‘A’ mark by almost four seconds with a 5:02.36 while Lauren Moran, also already qualified in the 3,000, doubled up with a 5:04.24 in the event.
The previous day, Scheese combined with Stephanie Persaud, Linsie Michels and Sami Andrews to hit the ‘A’ mark in the distance medley after touring the track in a near school-record time of 12:24.12.
Going provisional in the 60-meter hurdles, Eunice Makinde ran a season-best of 9.23 to eclipse the ‘B’ standard of 9.30 while finishing just out of reach of the auto barrier of 9.20 while Junia Limage nearly cracked the provisional level with a 2:20.84 in the 800.
Gabriella Dixson led the way in the field events with a pair of personal records. Dixson placed 9th overall in the shot put with a 44-3 1/4 and was followed by teammate Katherine Tripp with a 43-6 effort for 12th place. Dixson increased her season-best in the weight throw by almost three feet with a 54-1. Amanda Federici and Sharayah Kenady also fared well in the weight throw with Federici tossing a 49-0 3/4 and Kenady a 48-11.
“Gabi was outstanding meet in both events today. She looks great and it’s still pretty early in the season so she has a lot more left in her,” Dalzell said.
Tallying the lone school record for the CU women, Dominique Jacoy finished in 13th place in the pentathlon with a score of 3,009. Jacoy hit indoor personal record in the high jump, shot put and 800 to break her own school record by 172 points. Breaking the 3,000-point barrier, Jacoy earned the minimum qualification for indoor nationals for the multi-discipline event.
Finishing in third place, Bo Johnson generated the school’s top individual performance. Johnson notched a 56-5 3/4 to increase his career best by seven inches. Eric Whalen posted the men’s lone automatic qualifier with a 51-8 1/4 heave in the shot put while Branko Djuricic cleared 6-7 in the high jump to earn a provisional qualifier in his first competition while wearing the Navy & White.
Rounding out the men’s competition, Jameson Futter nipped the indoor school record in the long jump with a 21-11 3/4, erasing the former record of 21-0 3/4 set by Tim Dressler in 2008.
Concordia will return to action on Feb. 4 when it travels to Boise, Idaho for the United Heritage Invitational. The following day, the Cavs will compete at the Bronco Invitational with both events being hosted by Boise State University.
