PORTLAND, Ore. – Eastern Oregon scored 20 consecutive points as part of a 28-4 run to take a 15-point first half lead as the Mountaineers defeated Concordia 72-64 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball contest Friday night at Cavalier Gymnasium.

The loss drops Concordia’s record to 16-8 overall, 8-4 in the CCC. Eastern Oregon improves to 14-8 overall and 6-7 in conference play.
Concordia took a quick 11-2 lead to start the game as Danielle Clauson scored the Cavs’ first seven points. But a Rosebud Guthrie layup sparked a run of 20-straight points for Eastern Oregon that turned a nine-point deficit into an 11-point advantage as Concordia went more than seven minutes without scoring.
Clauson’s jumper ended the CU scoring drought, but the Mountaineers stretched their lead to 15 points with 3:20 to play before halftime on Nicole Redd’s jumper. The Cavaliers scored the next five points to pull within 10, but back-to-back three-pointers by Shaylee Nielsen gave Eastern Oregon a 36-20 lead, and Gabi Beyer’s free throw put the score at 36-20 going into the intermission.
Courtney May’s free throw with 14:07 to play in the second half pulled the Cavaliers to within nine points at 44-35, but the Mountaineers responded with a three-point play from Kyle Miller at the other end when Miller was fouled on a layup. Eastern Oregon led by 12 at 49-37 when CU scored six-straight points to get to 49-43 with 11:07 remaining. Kelsea Hurliman ended CU’s streak with a three-pointer to put the Mountaineers back up by nine, and Eastern Oregon eventually stretched its lead to 13 at 68-55 in the final three minutes.
The Cavaliers used a 9-2 run to get back to within six at 70-64 in the final minute, but Miller hit a pair of free throw with 21 seconds remaining to set the final score at 72-64.
Clauson (Edmonds, Wash./Kings H.S.) led all scorers with 27 points, the only CU player to reach double figures. May (Napavine, Wash./Napavine H.S.) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go with eight points and four assists.
Vintea Georges led a group of four Eastern Oregon players who reached double-digits in the scoring column. Georges tallied 21 points on 7-9 shooting. Guthrie totaled 16 points for the Mountaineers, and Miller and Nielsen each scored 10 in the win.
Concordia returns to action Feb. 4, when the Cavaliers travel to Salem, Ore., to face Corban in a CCC game scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
