PORTLAND, Ore. - The Northwest Christian University women's basketball team broke a seven-game losing streak and broke through with their first Cascade Conference win of the year on Friday night, upsetting #15 Concordia University and handing the Cavaliers their first CCC loss on the season, 65-60. The Beacons trailed by one point at half-time and after an early trey for CU in the second half, Northwest Christian went on a 9-0 run to establish a 37-32 lead with 16:25 to play. The Cavaliers rallied and were once again ahead, 53-46 with under seven minutes remaining. The Beacons then went on another streak, scoring nine unanswered to take the lead with exactly four minutes to play. The teams traded leads over the next minute, but NCU took advantage of a pair of Cavalier turnovers, going ahead by as many as six before claiming the five-point win. Northwest Christian, who also pulled off a big upset on the road last season, beating then #18 College of Idaho, shot 40% in the game and held Concordia to 39%. The defense was highlighted by their play against Danielle Clausen. One of the top seven scorers in the NAIA this season, Clausen was held to just 17 points on 5-for-12 shooting before fouling out late in the game. The Beacons (5-11, 1-5 CCC) ware led by Lindsey Shearer (pictured), scoring 17 points. Sheena Alexander followed with 15 and Aly Bruns added eleven. Hope Williams scored eight points and continued her streak of strong nights cleaning the glass as she hauled in 11 rebounds. Clausen led the Cavaliers (13-5, 5-1) with her 17 points and seven rebounds. Sarah Eischen chipped in 11 points and six rebounds along with a game high three steals. The Beacons will return to action on Saturday night, remaining in Portland to take on Warner Pacific College (8-7, 3-3) at 7:30 pm.
