Knights Need Overtime to Stop Warriors
PORTLAND, Ore. – Warner Pacific held Corban without a field goal in overtime to outlast the Warriors 87-85 in Cascade Conference action tonight at C.C. Perry Gym.
The game was in doubt until the final horn however, as the visiting Warriors hit 7 of 12 attempts from the free throw line to stay within striking distance. The host Knights managed to make only 5 of 12 from the line in extra time, but baskets from Webster Moreland and Sean Gaines put WP over the top.
The win moves Warner Pacific to 9-7 overall and 2-4 in CCC play, while Corban drops to 11-7 and 1-5.
Corban was the agressor early in the contest, forging a nine point advantage (26-17) with 7:38 to play in the period. The Knights responded with a 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game, and the teams grudgingly settled for a 37-37 tie at halftime.
The second half was close throughout, with Warner Pacific leading by as much as six but unable to pull away. Moreland made one of two free throws with 16 seconds to play to put WP in front 78-75, but Corban’s Jake Mauermann drained a long three point shot with 2 seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.
Moreland finished with a season best 30 points for the Knights, and also grabbed 13 rebounds. Traevone Bowie added 17 points, including four makes from distance.
Jordan Carter led Corban with 24 points and 7 assists, while Ian Logan dropped in 23 points. The Warrior basketball program also extended their streak with at least one three pointer made to 800 consecutive games.
Warner Pacific will host Northwest Christian tomorrow night, while Corban heads across Portland to take on Concordia. Start time is 5:30 pm for both contests.
