Knights Complete Comeback, Upend Corban 3-2
BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – Warner Pacific scored a pair of second half goals to complete a comeback wn over Corban, 3-2 at David Douglas High School today.
The victory moves WP to 6-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Cascade Conference play. Corban falls to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in CCC contests.
The host Knights got on the board first as Ryan O’Dell scored his first goal of the season. The senior scored from close range in the 7th minute after a well placed crossing pass from Alija Sacirovic.
Warner Pacific continued to apply pressure forward, but the visiting Warriors counter-attacked in the 20th minute. The breakout was finished by Devin Chaney, who found the back of the net after receiving a pass from Tyler Hagen.
Corban gained momentum and went in search of a second goal. They were handed it in the 33rd minute, as a mixup in the WP center defense allowed Chaney to pounce and slot home a goal past a diving Drew Bonifacio.
Regrouping after halftime, Warner Pacific equalized off the boot of Sacirovic. In the 66th minute, the Knights connected several passed at the edge of the penalty area which led to a 12 yard shot from Brandon Tatum. The attempt clanged off the crossbar and the Warriors looked to be safe, but the ball fell to Sacirovic who did not miss and tied the game at 2-2.
Neither team were to be satisfied with a draw, as the game opened up even more in the late stages. Jameson Jones scored the game winner for Warner Pacific at the 81:56 mark, flicking home an 8 yard shot from right in front. Sacirovic earned his second assist of the day on the play after a nice buildup down the left side of the pitch.
Corban provided some late drama and nearly tied the game, but Derik Chaney’s free kick from 25 yards hit the post and the Knight defense was able to clear.
Warner Pacific will next take the field versus Concordia on Saturday, October 8th at David Douglas. Corban hosts Northwest Christian on the same day.
