Concordia Men Win 3rd Straight at Willamette; Cavalier Women Place 4th at Bowles Invite

SALEM, Ore.—Behind top-10 finishes by Matthew Clowes and Ben Foubert, the No. 5-ranked Concordia men’s cross country team defeated a loaded field at the 37th Annual Charles Bowles Invitational hosted by Willamette University on Saturday morning.
Concordia tallied a team score of 85 points to edge No. 10-ranked Lewis-Clark State (92) by seven points. Eighth-ranked Southern Oregon placed third with 95 points while No. 23-ranked Eastern Oregon upset a pair of higher ranked teams in No. 17 Biola (7th, 189 points) and No. 23 British Columbia (9th, 249 points for sixth place overall.
Overall, seven schools from the Cascade Collegiate Conference competed in the event with Corban (15th, 413 points), Oregon Tech (16th, 446 points), Warner Pacific (18th, 501 points) and Northwest Christian (19th, 516 points) rounding out the field.
A pair of unattached runners were the first to cross the line out of the 260 total individual finishers with William Kincaid tackling the 8,000-meter course around Bush’s Pasture park with a time of 24:01.56, four seconds ahead of the second-place runner.
Lewis-Clark State’s Jimmy Obino was the first collegian to finish with a 24:18.47 while Northwest’s Seth Bridges pulled ahead of Southern Oregon’s James Johnstone 24:20.30 to 24:33.75 for CCC superiority.
Just three seconds back of Johnstone for seventh place overall and fifth place in terms of team scoring, Clowes was clocked in at 24:36.32 to pace the Cavaliers. Foubert quickly followed in 10th place overall (seventh in team scoring) with a 24:44.64.
Shadowing each other for much of the race, Cory Pena (19th, 25:15.91) and Marcus Nelson (21st, 25:17.49) finished as CU’s third and fourth runner, respectively, while Andrew Landstrom gave the Cavs its final scorer in 33rd place with a time of 25:31.05.
Jasen Brown, in his first race for CU, placed 53rd with a 26:04.64 and Brandon Schmuckley placed 78th with a 26:31.17 to round out the CU contingent.
“This meet was a great practice for a national type of event,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “We are still working through a couple of injuries, but we had a great overall team effort today, especially with Ben (Foubert) and Andrew (Landstrom) running huge personal records.”
The Cavs top five runners averaged a 25:05.09. In comparison, the University of Portland, ranked No. 11 in NCAA DI, averaged a 24:32.32 en route to winning the ‘Cardinal’ section of the Charles Bowles Invitational.
Concordia returns to action on Oct. 15 when it hosts the CU/adidas Classic held at Fernhill Park in Portland, Ore.
Women’s Recap: CU Places Fourth at Charles Bowels Invite
SALEM, Ore.—In a field which featured six of the top-20 ranked schools in the NAIA, the Concordia University women’s cross country team placed fourth overall with 129 points at the 37th Annual Charles Bowles Invitational hosted by Willamette University on Saturday morning.
The University of British Columbia, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, fought off the fifth-ranked Beacons of Northwest Christian, 69 points to 82 points, for the team championship, while No. 3-ranked Biola (Calif.) placed third overall out of 20 teams with 96 total points.
Despite placing fourth, Concordia still defeated two ranked teams and three others that received votes in the most recent coaches’ poll as nine of the 12 NAIA squads represented were either ranked or received votes coming into the meet.
Lewis-Clark State, the NAIA’s No. 19-ranked team finished next after Concordia with 204 points while No. 15 Southern Oregon placed sixth with 205 points. Fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference schools, Northwest University (9th, 243 points) and Eastern Oregon (11th, 261 points) also fared well while Corban (12th, 301 points) and Warner Pacific (19th, 533 points) rounded out the CCC competitors.
“I felt like we ran well with some significant improvements,” CU head coach Randy Dalzell said. “We need to shorten the gap between our top five but we showed that we are still developing and have the potential to be a top team at the end of the year.”
Running unattached, Kristen Rohde won the individual chase with a 17:25.81 for the 5,000-meter course around Bush’s Pasture Park, creating an eight-second gap over runner-up Jen Puzey, also competing unattached.
Northwest Christian’s Ally Manley was the first collegiate racer across the line with a 17:36.77 while Concordia alumni Andria Scheese placed fourth overall with a 17:41.09 while competing unattached.
Current Cavalier Gina Paletta led the No. 9-ranked team with a seventh-place finish while scoring a team-best four points with a time of 17:41.09. Lauren Moran and Junia Limage cracked the top 20 with Moran crossing in 18:29.77 for 16th place and Limage in 18:38.91 for 19th place.
A pair of freshman recorded CU’s fourth and fifth-place scores with Sarah Whybark finishing in 24th place at 18:40.72 and Natalie Ball in 66th place with a 19:42.04.
Others competing for CU included: Kristina Cupp (20:07.33), Ellen Dexter (21:30.22) and Andrea Avalos (22:27.51)
Concordia averaged 18:40.0 for its top five finishers compared to an 18:28.34 for the team champions from UBC. NCU posted the lowest average with an 18:19.76.
Overall, seven runners cracked the 18-minute barrier in the ‘Gold’ race, compared to just three in the ‘Cardinal’ race which featured teams from NCAA DI, DII and DIII. Chico State, ranked NO. 2 in NCAA DII, won the ‘Cardinal’ section with an average time of 18:09.
