EUGENE, Ore. – A Denise Powell goal in the 16th minute was all the scoring needed by Southern Oregon in a 1-0 Cascade Collegiate Conference victory over host Northwest Christian University on Monday afternoon at Mike Kelly Field.

The Raiders outshot NCU 17-2 in the game, allowing just a single first-half shot on goal, but the stingy Beacon defense, led by senior Goalkeeper Ali Foster, kept the ball out of the net for most of the afternoon.

NCU Head Coach Brett Bentley said, “My hat goes off to the girls. After a tough loss in our last outing, they got back to our sound, solid defensive principles. We held a very good team in check. They had chances and Ali come up big on a number of occasions. You have to commend our back four for playing smart on the field in Kara Nelson, Jeneca Hoidal, Elizabeth Jablonski and Brianne Lagumina. They played very well.”

The scoring drive was first created by Julie Zamzow, creating a turnover near midfield, after she found Stephanie Carr, Carr sent in a solid through ball to Powell (pictured) who punched home a 5-yard strike for the game-winner.

Northwest Christian (1-10, 1-3 CCC), who got both of their shots from Katelyn Partridge, will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Warner Pacific at 1:00 pm.

Southern Oregon (6-5-1, 3-1), currently receiving votes in the NAIA coaches’ poll, will next play on Thursday, hosting Trinity Lutheran University.
