Cavs Best Corban to Open CCC's 2nd Round
STATS - Concordia vs. Corban
PORTLAND, Ore.—The No. 13 Concordia men’s soccer team opened the second round of conference with its second win over Corban University, 3-0 on Tuesday.
The win improves the Cavs record to 11-1-0 overall and 7-1-0 in the CCC. Corban, meanwhile, drops to 6-6-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the CCC. They’ll next host Warner Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 15, the same day the Cavs return to action at home against Northwest Christian at 3 p.m.
Like their previous win over Corban, Concordia put in two goals in the first half to build an early lead. This time, forward Jared Brace, fresh off his four-goal performance against Warner Pacific on Saturday, struck first with a goal in the 20th minute. Senior co-captain Facundo Dipascuale started the play with a pass up to forward Septi Danciu. Danciu then pushed the ball through a pair of defenders to Brace who floated a ball up that then arched heavily downwards back towards the goal. The odd flight of the ball confused the Corban goalkeeper for a moment, giving the ball enough time to find the upper right corner of the net.
Now with the lead, a similar cast of characters struck again in the 28th minute to put the Cavs up by two. On this play, Brace started the strike, centering the ball to Danciu. From there, Danciu fed Daniel Anderson with another touch pass up between two Corban defenders. Once with the ball, Anderson fired a shot across the ground to the left post that found the net again.
After that, the Concordia defense clamped down, only allowing two more shots before halftime and then only two more through the entire second half.
Corban’s goalkeeper Steven Mason also stepped up, defensively, saving four shots in the second half, while cutting off several more Concordia attacks.
Mason cut off one such chance at another Concordia goal in the 37th minute when CU’s Dipascuale fed a pass to Danciu in the box. Danciu then played another soft flick to Brace who put a hard shot on goal from 8 yards out. The ball looked headed for the net, but a diving save from Mason kept the score 2-0 at that point.
It wasn’t till the 85th minute that Concordia would strike again on the team’s last corner of the match. Freshman Nate Boatright took the corner, sending the ball to the far post where sophomore Tanner French found it. Jumping up with a couple Corban defenders, French did well just to beat them to the ball let alone guide the ball in. Sure enough, though, French’s header slipped into the upper right corner of the goal and gave Concordia its final score of the match. The goal also marked French’s first score as a Cavalier.
Overall, the Cavaliers bested Corban in shots (15-to-6), shots on goal (8-to-3) and corners (8-to-0).
In goal, Mason saved five shots, while allowing the three scores for Corban. On the flip side, Cole Dahle started his third straight match in goal for the Cavaliers, earning his second shutout of the season, while saving three shots.
