SOU Volleyball Sweeps Oregon Tech

ASHLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon extended its season-high 15-set winning streak as the No. 16 Raiders swept Oregon Tech (25-12, 25-16, 25-18) in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball action Wednesday night at Bob Riehm Arena.
With the win, the Raiders improve to 13-4 overall and 10-2 in the CCC. Oregon Tech falls to 10-9 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
The Raiders wore special black uniforms with pink sleeves in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as SOU and Providence teamed up for the Dig For A Cure event. A portion of the paid admission to the match will go to the Sister Therese Kohles Fund.
Southern Oregon scored the first three points of the opening set, but Oregon Tech tied it up at 6-6 on a four-point streak. The Raiders used a seven-point streak to pull away, closing the set on a 19-6 run to earn the set victory at 25-12 on Joey Parnell’s attack error.
The Raiders opened the second set with another three-point advantage, eventually stretching their lead to 7-2. Oregon Tech pulled within four points at 11-7, but SOU scored the next two points and the Owls never got closer than five points back the rest of the set. Megan Bartling clinched the 25-16 win for the Raiders, blocking Kaiulani Evans-Bautista’s attack attempt.
The Owls found themselves in a familiar position down 3-0 early in the third set, and SOU eventually stretched the lead to 11-5 on a block by Lauren Swetland. But Oregon Tech used a 6-1 run to pull within one point at 12-11 on Sarah Svedin’s service ace, and the Owls hung close until late in the set. With SOU leading 18-17, back-to-back kills by Natalie Scheller helped spark a 7-1 Raider run to clinch the 25-18 set victory and earn the 3-0 match win.
Bartling finished with a match-high eight kills on a .571 attack percentage, as the Raiders hit .291 as a team and limited OIT to a .000 attack percentage. Bartling also added four total blocks, including three solo blocks for SOU. Sarah Holgen added seven kills, and Scheller tallied six kills. Caryn Westrick led the team with 17 assists, and Becky Johnstone had a team-high 14 digs.
For Oregon Tech, Parnell led the Owls with seven kills, with Mindy Nalder adding six in the loss. Svedin finished with a match-high 21 assists, and Krystie Vea’s 10 digs led the team.
