Corban Overcomes Sluggish Start in Thrilling Five-Set Victory Over Rival Concordia

SALEM, Ore. – Corban and Concordia combined for over 100 kills and 200 digs in a thrilling five-set victory for the host Warriors, 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10), over the rival Cavaliers Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Corban's Chandra Baskoro led all players with a match-high 17 kills, while Kayla Ping and Tiffany Land added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Setters Megan Dees and Katherine Salness combined to hand out 48 assists, while libero Bethany Durre anchored Corban's defense with a team-best 29 digs. At the net, Land recorded a match-high five blocks to go along with double-doubles by Baskoro (17 kills & 17 digs) and Salness (20 assists & 13 digs).
For Concordia, Aria Nojima and Clair Thiel registered a team-high 14 kills each to go along with a pair of 11-kills performances by Leslie Hanks and Cassandra Koering. Setter Lindsay Mangan handed out a match-high 49 assists for the visiting Cavaliers, while libero Aubrie Concannon recorded a match-high 32 digs in leading Concordia's 111-dig defensive effort that had five different players register 13-or-more digs in the match.
In the opening set, Concordia quickly jumped out to an 11-point lead (15-4) before watching Corban comeback to within seven points (23-15) thanks to an 11-7 run. Concordia's lead was too big for the host Warriors to overcome, as the visiting Cavaliers cruised to a nine-point win (25-16).
Set #2 would be a dog-fight over the opening 34 combined points. With the score knotted at 17-all following a kill by Land, Corban used a 3-0 run to secure a 20-17 lead on a Concordia hitting error. The visiting Cavaliers would pull within a mere two points (24-22) on a kill by Nojima before Corban closed out the second set on a Concordia attack error to knot the match at a set-apiece with a 25-22 victory.
The third set would see both teams battle to a 7-7 tie before Corban used another 3-0 run to secure a 10-7 advantage following a Baskoro kill. The host Warriors would never relinquish the lead pushing it to as much as six points (23-17) on another Baskoro kill. Concordia would pull within three points (23-20) thanks to a combo block by Mangan and Thiel forcing Corban to call a timeout. After the break, the host Warriors used a set-closing 2-0 run that included a Concordia service and hitting error en route to grabbing a 2-1 lead in sets following the 25-20 victory.
Set #4 would once again see Corban grab an early lead (11-7) on a Baskoro kill before Concordia battled back to take a one-point lead (20-19) thanks to a 13-9 run that concluded with a Warrior hitting error. Concordia would continue its run pushing the lead to three points (23-20) before settling for the three-point win (25-22) on a kill by Koering that forced a fifth and deciding set.
The fifth and final set would see Corban jump out to a four-point lead (7-3) on a Cavalier hitting error before Concordia used a 6-2 run to pull within a single point (10-9). The host Warriors would catch fire over the final six combined points, as Corban closed out the match on a 5-1 run that included a pair of kills each by Land and Ping with the final point coming off the arm of Ping for the 15-10 come-from-behind victory.
With tonight's win, Corban snaps a five-match losing streak improving to 9-11 overall and 3-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference matches. On the other hand, Concordia falls to 11-8 overall and evens its league record at 6-6. Both teams will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, October 15th – beginning at 7:00 p.m. when Corban hosts Warner Pacific and Concordia continues its weekend road trip against Northwest Christian in Eugene.
