LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women's soccer team won its first conference game of the season with a 4-2 victory over Evergreen State Monday.
The Mountaineers (3-7-1, 1-3-1 Cascade Collegiate Conference) used three first half goals to give themselves room over TESC. EOU scored at least two goals in the game for only the second time this season.
Amanda Swenson opened the scoring in the 11th minute, completing an assist from Rachael Collins. Mauriana Gonzalez found Collins 16 minutes later to put EOU up 2-0. Collins struck again in the 32nd minute, connecting with Erika Whitehurst.
Eastern took a 4-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half when Kelli Jones found the back of the Geoduck net. Evergreen got its first goal in the 59th minute when Katie Hebein completed a Rayna Murphy assist. Anastasia Daniels scored an unassisted goal to complete the scoring in the 71st minute.
Murphy took a game-high six shots, putting five on goal. Daniels added five shots. Swenson, Whitehurst, Collins, and Jones each had three shots. Whitehurst and Jones both put three on goal. Evergreen outshot EOU, 20-16, but Eastern had a 10-8 shots on goal advantage.
Evergreen State's Lauren Davidson and the Mountaineers' Chantal Schefers each made six saves in the match. EOU had a 4-1 corner kick advantage and the Geoducks committed seven fouls to Eastern Oregon's five.
The Mountaineers travel to Oregon Tech for a night game Saturday at 7. Evergreen (2-8-1, 0-5) hosts Warner Pacific Saturday at 1 p.m.
