Home Season Ends in Win for Corban & Seniors
BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – In the regular season home finale for Corban's women's soccer team in which three seniors were honored during halftime, the Warriors defeated non-conference opponent Trinity Lutheran, 6-2, Monday on Warrior Field.
"We were able to put some quality pressure on them today resulting in some goals," said head coach Marty Ziesemer. "I am pleased with how our offense is playing well as we finish out the rest off the season. It is always good to get a win during the last home game for the seniors. These three have been an integral part of our team for the last four years."
In a halftime ceremony, three seniors – Brittany Bowman (Shelton, Wash.), Rachel Cole (San Ramon, Calif.), and Amanda Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) – were honored for their time spent in a Warrior uniform.
At the conclusion of the game, junior Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) had become the second player and Warrior within the past 48 hours to register a hat trick thanks to her three-goal performance. In her final game at home as a Warrior, Bowman handed out three assists to go along with goals by reigning CCC Offensive Player of the Week sophomore Audrey Sullivan (Puyallup, Wash.) and fellow sophomore Abigail Van Hoogen (Boise, Idaho).
The scoring began early for Corban, as the host Warriors netted goals in the sixth and ninth minute thanks to scores by Tsugawa and Sullivan. Tsugawa's goal was assisted by sophomore Rileigh Mankin (Manteca, Calif.) following Mankin's through ball that left Tsugawa one-on-one with Trinity Lutheran's keeper.
Just over three minutes later, Sullivan teamed with Bowman on a crossing pass in front of the goal that left Sullivan with a 5-yard tap-in for her team and conference-leading 13th goal of the season.
Trinity Lutheran would pull within a single goal in the 18th minute when Kayla Kliphardt took a pass from Briann Oostinga to make the score 2-1 in favor of the home team.
In the 33rd minute, Van Hoogen would put home the eventual game-winner when she took an errant pass away from the Lady Eagles' defense and placed a perfect shot under a diving TLU keeper for her fourth goal of the season.
Nearly ten minutes later, Trinity Lutheran got on the board again when Alex Chick scored an unassisted goal via a one-timer into the lower right corner of the net to pull the visiting Lady Eagles within a single goal (3-2).
In the final seconds of the opening half, Corban was handed a gift at the 44:59 mark. A miscommunication problem between a Trinity Lutheran defender and TLU's keeper resulted in a header over everyone that rolled over the end line and into the net for an own goal.
At halftime, Corban held a two-goal advantage (4-2) and also led in all three offensive categories – total shots (10-to-6), shots on goal (5-to-3), and corner kicks (2-to-1).
In the second half, Tsugawa and Bowman would team up on a pair of goals within 39 seconds of each other. Corban's first score of the final 45 minutes came at the 65:14 mark, as Tsugawa received a through ball straight across the 18-yard box for Bowman, turned to her left, and unleashed a one-timer into the back of the net.
At the 65:53 mark, the duo would team up once again with Tsugawa one-timing a lofting pass that Bowman sent over Trinity Lutheran's defense into the back of the net for the 10th goal of the season. With the score, Tsugawa has netted 31 career goals and pulls within a mere two goals of former Warrior Megan Waunch for fifth on the all-time career list in program history.
Sophomore Alexis Beattie (Brea, Calif.) played the entire game between the pipes for Corban registering a game-high tying four saves, while Trinity Lutheran's Kaylin Wilson also made four saves despite allowing all six goals.
Offensively, Corban controlled the flow of the game finishing ahead of the visiting Lady Eagles in all three statistical categories that included total shots (19-to-9), shots on goal (10-to-6), and corner kicks (4-to-2).
With today's win, Corban improves to 10-6-0 overall and Trinity Lutheran falls to 4-10-3 on the season. The Warriors will return to Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Saturday, October 29th, against Eastern Oregon beginning at 11:00 a.m. in La Grande.
