VICTORIA, B.C.—
The Concordia men’s golf team shaved 18 strokes off their first round score to rocket up from seventh to second at the Vikes Shootout on Tuesday.

Thanks to the big improvement, Concordia (305-287—592) finished one stroke ahead of host University of Victoria-BC (292-301—593) in third place and four-strokes ahead of CCC rival Corban University (296-300—596) in fourth. The University of British Columbia (287-294—581) won the tournament, though Concordia’s second round 287 tied their first round 287 as the low rounds of the shootout.

CU’s Jesse Heinly led the charge as he posted a marked improvement as an individual as well. Heinly, who had shot an opening round 75, recorded the low-score of the day with a second-round 70 to bring him all the way from tied for 15th overall to tied for fourth. Jed Dalton (76-71—147) also shaved five strokes off his score to finish as Concordia’s second golfer, while he too launched up the leaderboard on the second day, going from tied for 25th to tied for seventh.

Behind those two, Jess Wingett (T-13, 75-75—150) held steady on the second day, while Taylor Schmidt (79-71—150) posted the biggest improvement of any golfer at the tournament with a second day 71 to tie Wingett in 13th. In addition, Tanner Maahs (T-43rd, 80-78—158) rounded out the Concordia contingent, while CU’s Josh Vizcaino (25th, 78-77—155) and Corey King (30th, 84-79—163) competed as individuals.

The across-the-board improvement also wraps up the team’s fall schedule on a positive note. Concordia won’t compete again till they host their own tournament on March 19-20 of next year
