Evergreen Recognized for Win Over Concordia
PORTLAND, Ore. – After handing third-ranked Concordia its first Cascade Collegiate Conference loss in more than two years, the Evergreen women’s soccer team has been named the CCC Verizon Team of the Week, the conference office announced Sunday.
In a stunning 1-0 win over the Cavaliers on Monday, the Geoducks scored the only goal they would need when Brianna Speed fed in a cross from the touchline to the left post and the waiting head of Deirdre Dornay, who put it in the net in the game’s 17th minute. Freshman keeper Lauren Davidson preserved the shutout with stellar play in goal. She registered six saves.
The loss was the first in conference play for Concordia since the Cavs suffered a 2-1 overtime loss against College of Idaho on Oct. 23, 2009.
“I would just like to simply congratulate our women on their effort,” said Evergreen coach Adam Fenster. “Concordia is a very good, strong team that had some excellent chances to not only tie it up but to have won it as well. I thought we played very well in the first half scoring a nice goal and then defended to the best of our ability in the second. That was definitely the highlight game of the season for us.”
