11 Named Red Lion Players of the Week

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Eleven student-athletes in the sports of volleyball, soccer, cross country and golf have been recognized as Red Lion Players of the Week for the period ending Oct. 2.

The honorees:

Volleyball

Hitter – Southern Oregon University’s Sarah Holgen, a 5-10 senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, totaled 38 kills in two matches as the Raiders improved to 10-4 overall. She had 25 kills in a 3-1 win over Northwest Christian, marking her fifth match this season with at least 20 kills.

Honorable mention: Torrey Hulsey, College of Idaho; Danielle Nance, Northwest Christian; Jessica Lea, Eastern Oregon; Clair Thiel, Concordia.

Setter – College of Idaho’s Kelsey Soos, a 5-9 junior from Santa Ynez, Calif., totaled 91 assists in two matches as the Yotes posted victories over Eastern Oregon and Westminster (Utah). Soos had 50 assists vs. EOU and 41 vs. Westminster. C of I extended its winning streak to 10 straight.

Honorable mention: Cori Wallace, Northwest Christian; Lauryn Ernster, Northwest; Emily Sampson, Eastern Oregon; Lindsay Mangan, Concordia; Caryn Westrick, Southern Oregon.

Libero – Northwest University’s Heather Shulke, a 5-6 junior from Castle Rock, Wash., averaged more than nine digs per set as the Eagles defeated Concordia and Warner Pacific.

Honorable mention: Whitney Brigham, College of Idaho; Dana Clark, Northwest Christian; Leigh Anne MacCarthy, Eastern Oregon; Aubrie Concannon, Concordia; Becky Johnstone, Southern Oregon; Jacalyn Chew-Dorsey, Warner Pacific.

Men’s Soccer

Offensive – Warner Pacific’s Alija Sacirovic, a 5-8 senior forward from Portland, Ore., had two goals and two assists as the Knights went 1-1 in CCC play. Sacirovic reached the 30-goal mark for his career.

Honorable mention: Jeremy Novack, Evergreen; Luke Fischer, Northwest; Kaiaio Nahale-A, Concordia; Victor Corona, Oregon Tech.

Defensive: College of Idaho’s Aaron Reynolds, a 5-11 senior goalkeeper from Boise, Idaho, posted his 11th career shutout in a 1-0 CCC victory over Northwest (Wash.). In two matches, Reynolds had 10 saves and allowed just one goal as C of I posted a 2-0 record.

Honorable mention: Stephen Rock, Northwest Christian; Joe Galbraith, Northwest; Matt Caniglia, Concordia.

Women’s Soccer

Offensive – Concordia University’s Alex Thomas, a 5-8 junior forward from Wilsonville, Ore., assisted on the game-winning goal against Oregon Tech and added her team leading fourth-goal of the season in the 5-0 victory.

Honorable mention: Taylor Culver, College of Idaho; Miranda Cruz, Northwest Christian; Acacia Johnson, Northwest; Stephanie Carr, Southern Oregon.

Defensive – Northwest University’s Jordan Holmes, a 5-7 senior goalkeeper from Mountlake Terrace, Wash., recorded her third consecutive shutout in the Eagles’ win over Corban. She extended her streak without allowing a goal to 255 minutes.

Honorable mention: Aimee Pierson, College of Idaho; Ali Foster, Northwest Christian; Adrienne Lommasson, Concordia; Chenin Young, Southern Oregon.

 

Cross Country

Male – Northwest University’s Seth Bridges, a senior from Anderson Island, Wash., led all CCC runners at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, placing fourth overall among 266 competitors. Bridges finished in a time of 24:20 over the 8K course.

Honorable mention: Brian Bragg, Eastern Oregon; Matthew Clowes, Concordia; James Johnstone, Southern Oregon.


Female – Northwest Christian University’s Ally Manley, a freshman from Brookings, Ore., finished first among collegians at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem. Manley placed third overall among 223 runners, clocking a school-record time of 17:36 over the 5K course. NCU finished second overall.

Honorable mention: Karlee Coffey, Eastern Oregon; Gina Paletta, Concordia; Seena Frantz, Southern Oregon.


Golf

Male – Concordia University’s Jesse Heinly, a sophomore from Bend, Ore., captured medalist honors at the Boise State Invitational, beating out more than 50 NCAA Division I golfers for the crown. Heinly fired a three-round total of 13-under par in winning his second consecutive tournament this fall.

Female – Concordia University’s Sunny Powers, a sophomore from Medford, Ore., led the Cavaliers with an 18th-place individual finish at the Grand Canyon Fall Invitational, a tournament featuring four ranked NCAA Division II teams and five teams that finished in the top 20 at last year’s NAIA National Championships.
