STATS - Concordia vs. Southern Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore.—Behind 18 kills from senior outside hitter Sarah Holgen, the No. 18 Southern Oregon Raiders swept Concordia 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-23) on Friday.
Despite the sweep though, Concordia gave itself a good chance at pushing the match to a fourth set. The Cavs took a small early advantage in the third and then won six out of seven points in the middle of the set to stretch an 11-8 lead to 17-9. At that point, the Cavalier offense was humming with ten kills and, remarkably, no errors.
However, Holgen and the Raiders strung their own run together after that and turned Concordia’s 17-9 advantage into a 21-22 lead of their own. At that point, Concordia got two kills to retake the lead at 23-22, but SOU responded again, winning the last three points to take the set and the match. Holgen, in particular hurt the Cavs, as the senior recorded six kills alone over the last 11 Raider points.
Still, while SOU took the match, Concordia ended the night on its best set statistically, hitting .174 with thirteen kills against only five errors. Overall, senior Aria Nojima led the Cavs with 10 kills, while Melanie Miller came in right behind with nine. Sophomore setter Lindsay Mangan also played well in the middle, putting up 26 assists through three sets.
On this night, though, the Raiders just proved too much. Holgen ended up with 18 kills against only three errors for a .469 hitting percentage, while Natalie Scheller added 10 kills against no errors to hit .455. Feeding them the ball, setters Caryn Westrick and Angela Spieker recorded 25 and 11 assists respectively, as the team totaled 41 assists out of only 102 attacks. The Raiders defense also stood out, blocking 11 Concordia attacks, led by Megan Bartling and Haley Fikso with eight and seven block assists, respectively.
The Cavaliers had chances in the early sets too, but more SOU runs turned the sets around. In the first, SOU turned a 7-6 Concordia advantage into a 20-11 lead of their own. The Raiders closed out the first 25-13 after that, then turned another Concordia lead into their own advantage again in the second. CU led 14-13 in the second, but SOU scored 12 of the last 15 points to win the set 25-17 and head into the break up 2-0.
The loss drops Concordia to 10-7 overall and 5-5 in the CCC. SOU, meanwhile, improves to 11-4 overall and 8-2 in the CCC. They’ll now travel to Warner Pacific on Saturday, while Concordia returns to their home court against Oregon Tech on the same day. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
