EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon Tech scored early and often and Hayley Smith scored a hat-trick as the Owls took their second game of the season from Northwest Christian University in women’s soccer action on Saturday. The Owls scored in the first minute of the game and went on to finish a 5-0 rout of the Beacons.

OIT set the tone just 52 seconds into the game when Taryn Urmson found Smith on a pass from the corner. From 15-yards out, Smith laid a perfect strike into the upper right corner of the net for what would be the game winner.

Urmson went on to score herself in the 19th minute. Rebekah Nisbet sent a pass down the right side line which was received by Meghan Drost. Drost sent in a hard shot which ricocheted straight down off the crossbar. Urmson was there to head in the open-net goal.

The Owls added three more goals in the second half in a span of eight minutes midway through the period. In the 62nd minute, Drost sent a through ball that left Alysa Castle alone versus NCU keeper Ali Foster. Castle fired home the goal, making it 3-0. In the 65th, Smith created her own opportunity and fired the ball off and over Foster for her second goal of the night.

Drost, who scored a hat-trick against the Beacons back in the first meeting in September, helped Smith complete hers, sending a through ball that left her all alone against the keeper once again in the 70th minute.

The Beacons were outshot 20-9 in the game including a 10-3 edge in shots-on-goal. Senior Karli Vath led the Beacons with four shot attempts and Foster finished the night with five saves.

Oregon Tech (4-3-1, 2-1 CCC) holds onto a piece of fourth place in the CCC with the win and will travel to Salem, Ore. to take on Corban University on Monday afternoon at 3:00 pm.

Northwest Christian (1-9, 1-2) will be back in action on Monday, playing host to Southern Oregon University at 2:00 pm.
