STATS - Concordia vs. New Hope
PORTLAND, Ore.—For the second straight game, Concordia cracked the 90-point barrier en route to a blowout win to improve to 2-0 with a 94-61 victory over New Hope Christian on Thursday.
Concordia will next take the court on Nov. 14 when it travels to face NCAA DI the University of Idaho for an exhibition game in Moscow, Idaho. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the Memorial Gym.
“It was another great opportunity to see different combinations while getting a lot of players extended minutes, but we need to keep improving, especially on the defensive end and blocking out on the boards,” CU head coach Barbarick said. “I was really impressed with New Hope. They ran their stuff well and their post was a legit big that gave us problems.”
After trailing 13-11 through six minutes of action, Concordia retook the lead with a Drew Preuninger 3-pointer at the 14:26 mark in the first half. The Deacons were able to sneak back to within two points on a pair of occasions, the second occurring on a Marcus Callahan layup with 12:58 to go with the score 18-17.
The single point difference would be the closest NHC would get as the Cavs would go on a 31-7 run over the next 10 minutes to stake a 25-point lead. The Deacons snared the final two buckets of the half, including a 3-pointer from Corey Gantt to cut the deficit to 20 point, but coming out of the break the Cavs continued to extend their advantage, eventually generating as much as a 36-point advantage late in the half.
Preuninger, a senior guard, led all scorers with 20 points after landing 6 of 9 from three-point territory. Adam Herman followed with 14 points after connecting on six of his 10 attempts while Jourdan Sweeney and Aaron Corsi chipped in with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Cavs shot a scorching 70.4 percent from the floor in the first half before cooling down to 44.1 percent in the second half while all 12 players saw action in the second half.
We are really excited about our new players,” Barbarick said. “Aaron (Corsi) and Anthony (Holton) combined for 19 points in just 25 minutes. They will definitely bring some new dimensions to our team.”
New Hope finished with a 41.1 percent shooting rate and was led by 19 points from Calahan while teammate Forest Stolk added 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Overall, CU outrebounded the Deacons 38 to 30 and forced 19 turnovers. The two teams combined to be whistled for 41 fouls in the contest with CU earning 21 of those offenses.
