Oregon Tech Settles for 62-52 Win at William Jessup
ROCKLIN, Calif. – Bobby Hunter poured in a game-high 19 points and Kyle Gomez drained a 3-pointer with just under three minutes remaining to help lift fourth-ranked Oregon Tech to a 62-52 victory over William Jessup University in day 1 of the Bill Holtz Classic.
A Josh Johnson short jumper with 6:31 to play in the first period gave the Owls a comfortable 10 point lead, but the host team would hold OIT scoreless and knock down the final five points of the half, as the Owls held just a 21-16 lead at intermission.
WJU came out of the half on a 12-7 run to tie the contest at 28-28 with 13:47 to play.
Kyle Gomez would eventually cap a 14-3 run on a layup and free throw to give OIT a nine point advantage. The Owls would then move up by as many as 14 points twice, the last with just over seven minutes remaining, before holding on for the 62-52 win.
Hunter added six steals, five rebounds and four assists to go with his game-high in points. David Clarke finished with 10 as the only other Owl in double figures. Kyle Gomez added nine points to go with four rebounds, while Jason Gamblin and Scotty Riddle combined for 16 points in the win for OIT.
Oregon Tech moved to 3-0 overall after shooting 20-for-48 (42%) from the floor, including 7-of-20 from long range and 15-for-18 at the charity stripe. The Owls also held a 31-23 advantage on the boards.
Oregon Tech plays Cal Maritime University tomorrow at 3 p.m. in game 2 of the Bill Holtz Classic, before hosting tonight’s opponent, William Jessup, in game 1 of the Midland Empire Insurance Classic in Klamath Falls on Friday, November 18th.
