PORTLAND, Ore.—With a pair of wins during the conference championships last week while opening its new stadium, Concordia University will have another chance to showcase the facility as both the men’s and women’s teams will host NAIA National Championship Opening Round matches on Nov. 19, the NAIA announced today.
Concordia will host the men’s team from the University of Great Falls (Mont.) at 4 p.m. on Tuominen Yard while the women’s team will face Westminster (Utah) at 7 p.m.
The Concordia men’s team finished the season 15-1-1 overall and earned a No. 11 ranking in the final NAIA Soccer Modified Ratings Percentage Index (MRPI). The men earned an automatic bid into the national championships with a 2-0 win over Corban University in the CCC Tournament Championship. Next weekend’s match will represent the sixth appearance at the NAIA National Championships for the Cavaliers.
After defeating Northwest University 1-0 last Saturday, the CU women, ranked No. 8 in the final NAIA MRPI index, earned its 11st straight appearance to the national championships.  The streak is the second longest active run among NAIA schools and will be the fourth straight season where the team qualified to host the opening round match of nationals. The Cavaliers finished the season with a 15-4-1 record.
The winner of the Opening Round matches will earn a berth to the NAIA National Championship final sites, Nov. 29-Dec. 3. The men’s championship will continue with 16 teams traveling to Orange Beach, Ala., while the women’s teams will compete in Decatur, Ala.
Concordia has faced Great Falls on one occasion previously with CU earning a 5-0 win on Oct. 29, 2010 while playing in Portland. The CU women faced Westminster on Sept. 25 of this year in the only previous meeting between the two teams. The Cavaliers defeated the Griffins 3-0 at delta Park in Portland.
