2011 All-CCC Teams

PORTLAND, Ore.—
Amid constant rain and blustery conditions, the No. 7 Concordia women's soccer team took home the CCC Tournament title once again, beating Northwest 1-0 on Saturday in the first day of action ever held at the new Tuominen Yard on Concordia’s campus.

However, while CU's Alex Thomas score the game-winning goal, the strongest offensive force of the night was the 20 mile per hour winds as both team's played much better halves with the winds at their backs.

Northwest opened with the favorable wind and rode it to early advantages in shots (10-to-5) and corners (7-to-1). The Eagles tallied three quick corners and a pair of shot attempts in just the first six minutes alone with Shea Samuelson threatening with a strong wind up at the 5:48 mark.

The wind got so bad in the first half that any ball played into the air would suck back towards the Concordia goal. Consequently, the Eagles possessed the ball for approximately two-thirds of the entire period.

However, both teams' fortunes switched after the break as Concordia now played with the wind. The Cavaliers responded early, too, as they posted three shots in the first 13 minutes of the second half.

Still, the match remained scoreless deep into the second half and each possession became more and more meaningful.

The Cavs got the much-sought after goal when Thomas sent home a shot in the 79th minute. Teammate Hayley Hayes sent her the ball off a corner that Thomas redirected with a slight touch near the goal line to the far post and over Northwest's goalkeeper.

Northwest got a late shot from Abby Brauer after that, but Concordia held on to take the win 1-0.

In goal, Talbutt saved four shots, while Northwest's Jordan Holmes saved one.

Overall, the Eagles edged Concordia in most statistical categories, including shots (12-to-9), shots on goal (4-to-3) and corners (8-to-3).

Still, Concordia got the win and will now move onto the NAIA Tournament with the strong possibility that the team will host an opening round match next Saturday, Nov. 19. That won't be determined, though, until the bracket is released late Sunday.
