SOU Women Improve to 8-0 with 74-60 Win Over Montreat

Southern Oregon overcame a slow start to defeat Montreat 74-60 in non-conference women’s basketball action Tuesday night at Bob Riehm Arena.

With the win, Southern Oregon improved to 8-0 this season. Montreat fell to 3-1 with the loss. The Raiders return to action Friday, when they will play Cal. Maritime in the Flagship Inn Classic at 5:30 p.m. at Bob Riehm Arena.

Josi McDermott led the way for SOU with 19 points, seven assists and five steals. Haley Newell connected on four three-pointers and finished with 16 points, while Angelica Cahee posted 13 points and RaTanya Newsome added 11. Nalani Hernandez grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with eight points in the win.

Alicia Wallace led Montreat with 18 points and nine rebounds. Ebony Battle added 14 points and Kaitlyn Clontz finished with 10 points for the Cavaliers.

Montreat took an early 13-4 lead after SOU missed five of its first six shots. Cahee sparked a 13-2 SOU run with a layup, and the Raiders took the lead at 16-15 on Newsome’s layup with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half. Southern Oregon closed the half on a six-point streak to take a 27-19 lead into the break.

The Raiders picked up their first double-digit lead of the game on a Newell three-pointer early in the second half. Their lead reached 15 points on a trey by Newsome with 9:57 to play, and the Cavaliers would not get closer than seven points back the rest of the way. Clontz hit a three-pointer with 3:32 remaining to make it 65-58, but SOU responded with a seven-point run capped by another Newsome three with 1:09 remaining to put the game away.
