Cavs Drop Second Game at Vanguard Thanskgiving Classic
STATS - Concordia vs. Concordia-Irvine
COSTA MESA, Calif.—The Concordia men’s basketball team faced a tough opponent in Concordia-Irvine on Saturday and lost 97-78 in their final game at the Vanguard Thanksgiving Classic.
Concordia (3-3) couldn’t make up an early deficit as the team was held under 50 percent from the field for the first time this season.
Concordia-Irvine (7-0) played its best defense in the opening period when they outshot the Cavs 64.5 percent to 41.7 percent from the floor.
That difference helped the Eagles take an early advantage in the game that they would hang on to for the rest of the night.
The Cavaliers played even with the Eagles through the first three minutes, though, and tied it at 9-9 with a lay-up from Adam Herman with 16:59 remaining. That’s when the Eagles went on their run, however, as they outscored the Cavs 13-2 over the next three minutes of the game. That run gave the Eagles a 22-11 lead with 14:01 remaining, which they’d eventually push out to 57-40 at halftime.
Fortunately, while the Eagles maintained their lead throughout, the Cavs played a much more competitive game in the second half. The statistics reflected the change as the Cavs outshot the Eagles in field goal percentage 53.1-to-38.9 in the period. The Cavs also defended the Eagles’ three-point shooting better in the second half, forcing the Eagles to shoot 1-of-10 from beyond the arc after they had made 7-of-9 three-pointers in the first half.
Overall, CU’s Kevan West led the team with 17 points off 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Following West, Aaron Corsi scored 14 for the Cavs, while Herman added 11 to go along with a team-high six rebounds.
For the Eagles, Cameron Gliddon led the way with a game-high 23 points that included six of the team’s eight made three-pointers.
Next up, the Cavaliers will travel back to Portland for a game at Portland Bible College on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
