BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Center Chelsea Haskey led a balanced attack with 16 points and 10 rebounds, helping Saint Martin's University to a 78-65 victory over Northwest University in first-day action Friday at the 15th annual Western Washington University Lynda Goodrich Women's Basketball Classic at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

The contest was a non-counting exhibition for Northwest, an NAIA affiliate, which is 2-4 in counting games. Guard Carol Howard had a game-high 17 points for the Eagles and guard Domi Mendezona added 15.

Northwest had a 13-8 lead five minutes into the contest, but Saint Martin's ran off eight straight points to trigger an 18-4 run, opening up a 26-17 lead it never relinquished.

The closest Northwest got was five points, 58-53, with 9:36 remaining on five straight points by Mendezona. But Saint Martin's responded with three-pointers by Gelhar and Shelby Ferguson for a 64-53 advantage with 8:27 to go and the Eagles never got closer than eight after that.

The Saints had a massive 34-4 advantage in bench scoring, with Emily Lashua having 10 points and Ferguson adding nine. Saint Martin's also had a 44-33 edge in rebounds.

Forward Emily Drivstuen had 13 points for Northwest and center Jessalyn Jackson added 10 points and game-highs of 13 rebounds and five steals.

The Saints, who also got 12 points from forward Megan Teade and 11 from guard Angela Gelhar, improved to 2-4 overall.

"I thought my kids played their hearts out," commented NU head coach, Lori Napier. "St. Martin's shots were just falling tonight."

Northwest plays host Western Washington at 5 p.m. tomorrow night.
