Eagles Fall to Vikings in Bellingham

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Northwest University got 21 points from junior Carol Howard but it wasn't enough as NU fell to the Western Washington Vikings in their second game of the Lynda Goodrich Tournament in Bellingham tonight. The game was an exhbition contest for Northwest U.

The Eagles battled the NCAA Division II Vikings in the first half as they found themselves trailing 12-6 in the first four minutes of the half, but two free throws by Jessalyn Jackson at the 13.46 mark would pull the Eagles to within four, 15-11. WWU would then go on an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 11 points, 23-11, with 11:14 to go. Down by 19 with 3:23 to go until the break, NU would out score WWU 11-3 to close the gap to 9 points at the half, 43-34.

In the second half, the Eagles would cut the Vikings lead to 6 points, 49-43, with 14:53 to go as Carol Howard would score on a driving layup. But once again, Western would go on an 8-0 run to make it 57-43 and lead by 14 with 13:38 remaining in the game. WWU would slowly pull away from the Eagles and Jenni White’s 3-pointer with 3:07 to go would give the Vikings their largest lead of 25 points, 84-59. A Domi Mendezona 3-pointer and a free throw by Carol Howard would make it an 87-67 final.

Howard led the Eagles with 21 points and 5 rebounds. Jessalyn Jackson finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds and a game high 7 blocks. Domi Mendezona scored 14 points as the Eagles shot 35% for the night. NU finished with 26 rebounds.

Kristin Shramm led Western Washington with 17 points and 8 rebounds to lead five Vikings with double figures. Sydney Donaldson scored a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds the Vikings dominated the boards with 63 rebounds, 36 offensive.

"We were determined to play aggressively no matter what," said Lori Napier, Eagle head coach. "They were just so much bigger than us, but I was incredibly proud of everyone on my team."

The Eagles will return home to prepare for their conference opener in Olympia next Saturday when they take on the Evergreen State College.
