Simon Fraser Defeats Southern Oregon 73-60

ASHLAND – Simon Fraser overcame an early double-digit deficit to take a two-point halftime lead and pull away to a 73-60 non-conference men’s basketball victory over Southern Oregon Sunday night at Bob Riehm Arena.
The loss drops Southern Oregon to 5-4 this season. Simon Fraser, an NCAA Div. II program, improves to 4-2 with the win. The Raiders return to action Dec. 2 when they host Northwest Christian in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener at 7:30 p.m. at Bob Riehm Arena.
Jordan Highland led SOU with 17 points, while Eric Thompson posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Javari Williams led SFU with 19 points, while Jordan Sergent finished with 18 points, Matt Raivio added 15 and Justin Brown tallied 10.
Southern Oregon built a double-digit lead early in the first half. The Raiders opened the game on a 12-2 run, with Thompson scoring nine of the first 12 points for SOU. A few minutes later Highland hit a pair of free throws to make it 19-8, but consecutive three-pointers by Seargent, Zack Frehlick and Raivio made it a two-point game and a couple of Williams free throws tied it up at 19-19. The Raiders held a one-point lead shortly before halftime, but Connor Lewis’ three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining put SFU up 33-31 at the break.
Simon Fraser scored the first five points of the second half, with Justin Brown’s three-pointer putting SFU up 38-31 one minute after halftime. A few minutes later Tim Weber hit a three and Highland added a layup to pull SOU within two at 41-39, but the Clan responded with a seven-point run to make it 48-39 with 14 minutes to play.
Simon Fraser’s lead reached 10 points midway through the second half on a Raivio layup that made it 56-46. The Clan stretched its lead to 16 a couple minutes later and the Raiders never pulled closer than 13 the rest of the way.
