Northwest Defeats Quest to Open Season

KIRKLAND, Wash. - The Northwest University women opened their 2011-12 season with a convincing 87-68 victory over visiting Quest University from British Columbia tonight in the NU Pavilion.

The Eagles took a 50-31 lead going into the locker room at halftime. shooting 58% (19-33) from the floor. The teams played to a 37-37 draw in the second half.

Four Eagles led Northwest U. (1-0) with double figures. Emily Drivstuen led all scorers with 24 points while teammate Jenna Lewis added 20 points. Newcomer Carol Howard registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and senior guard, Ebany Herd dropped in 14 points. Guard Domi Mendezona led all rebounders with 11 boards for the night. NU finished the game shooting 49% for the night, but lost the rebounding edge to Quest, 51-39.

Quest (5-3) from Squamish, B.C., was led by Nicola Hitchcock’s 16 points and 14 rebounds. Teammate Hillary Young added 15 points for the Kermodes who shot 32% as a team. Katryn Sandbichler scored the second double-double for QU with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

"It was a great way to start the season," commented Eagle coach, Lori Napier. "With so many new players, we are just learning each other’s strengths, so it's fun to see them learning to come together as a team."

The Eagles will now travel to northern California for two games next week against Pacific Union College of Angwin and Simpson University of Redding in two non-conference contests.
