7 Capture Weekly Conference Honors

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Seven student-athletes in the sports of soccer, volleyball and basketball have been recognized as Red Lion Players of the Week for the period ending Nov. 6, the conference office announced Monday.

The honorees:

Volleyball

Hitter – Southern Oregon University’s Sarah Holgen, a 5-10 senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, registered back-to-back double-doubles as the No. 14 Raiders extended their win streak to 13 with home wins over No. 6 College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon. Holgen had 14 kills and 18 digs vs. College of Idaho, and 17 kills and 11 digs vs. EOU.

Honorable mention: Ciciley Fox, College of Idaho; Jessica Lea, Eastern Oregon; Melanie Miller, Concordia; Danielle Nance, Northwest Christian; Tiffany Land, Corban; Breanna Covey, Northwest.

Setter – Eastern Oregon University’s Jessica Lea, a 5-8 senior setter from Prineville, Ore., had 57 assists in two matches to become the first player in EOU history to surpass 2,000 career assists. Lea had a career-best 41 assists vs. Southern Oregon.

Honorable mention: Kelsey Soos, College of Idaho; Lindsay Mangan, Concordia; Cori Wallace, Northwest Christian; Caryn Westrick, Southern Oregon; Lauryn Ernster, Northwest; Megan Dees, Corban.

Libero – Northwest University’s (Wash.) Heather Shulke, a 5-6 junior from Castle Rock, Wash., had 77 digs in two matches. She now has 533 digs this season, a school record. Shulke had 48 digs vs. Northwest Christian (Ore.).

Honorable mention: Whitney Brigham, College of Idaho; Kaitlyn Duncan, Eastern Oregon; Aubrie Concannon, Concordia; Dana Clark, Northwest Christian; Becky Johnstone, Southern Oregon.

Men’s Soccer

Offensive – Northwest University’s (Wash.) Edgar Esquivel, a 5-7 sophomore midfielder from Issaquah, Wash., scored the game-winning goal and added an assist as the Eagles secured the No. 2 seed in the CCC Tournament with a victory over Corban University (Ore.).

Honorable mention: Travis Newbold, College of Idaho; Joe O’Brien, Evergreen.

Defensive: Northwest University’s (Wash.) Joe Galbraith, a 6-4 sophomore goalkeeper from Whitefish, Mont., was credited with the shutout as the Eagles blanked Corban University (Ore.) 3-0 to secure the No. 2 seed in this week’s CCC Tournament.

Honorable mention: Aaron Reynolds, College of Idaho; Steven Mason, Corban.


Men’s Basketball

Southern Oregon University’s Eric Thompson, a 6-7 freshman forward from Roseburg, Ore., totaled 51 points and 17 rebounds in his first two games for the Raiders. Thompson led SOU with 34 points and nine boards in just 22 minutes of action in a road win over No. 25 Fresno Pacific.

Honorable mention: Matt Ballenger, College of Idaho; Travares Peterson, Eastern Oregon; Adam Herman, Concordia; Jordan Buhler, Northwest Christian; Scott Riddle, Oregon Tech; Jordan Carter, Corban; Biniam Tadele, Warner Pacific.


Women’s Basketball

Eastern Oregon University’s Korrie Bourn, a 5-10 junior forward from Winthrop, Wash., totaled 26 points, nine rebounds and two steals to help EOU to road wins over William Jessup (Calif.) and Cal Maritime.

Honorable mention: Laura Geis, College of Idaho; Aundrea Albright, Oregon Tech; Kelsey Mattsen, Warner Pacific; Josi McDermott, Southern Oregon.
