Trio Leads Corban to Win Over William Jessup

SALEM, Ore. – Three Warriors scored in double figures led by senior Katie Steigleman, as Corban's women's basketball team secured a non-conference win over William Jessup, 69-57, Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Steigleman netted a game-high 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting from the field to go along with 11 rebounds, while fellow senior Becky Buhler added 14 points to go along with freshman Tara Vanweerdhuizen's 12-point, 12-rebound performance. Junior Emily Tsugawa dished out a game-high eight assists, while also recording a game-high tying five steals.
Corban would quickly jump out to a 12-point lead (19-7) in the opening eight minutes before William Jessup used a 21-12 run to pull within three points (31-28) on a Rebecca Morris jumper at the 2:38 mark. Over the next two-plus minutes, Corban used an 8-0 run to go back up by double digits on a Tsugawa lay-in with 25 seconds left only to watch William Jessup score the opening half's final points on a Deanna Long three-pointer for the half time score of 40-31 in favor of the host Warriors.
In the second half, Corban used a 10-0 run over the opening 90 seconds en route to earning a 19-point lead (50-31) on a Buhler three-pointer with 18:36 on the clock. The host Warriors would continue to hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, as William Jessup could only get as close as 10 points (52-42) with 11:42 left. Despite not hitting a field goal over the final seven-plus minutes, Corban went 4-for-6 at the free throw line to end the game en route to securing the 12-point win (69-57).
William Jessup was led offensively by Cassie Davidson and Lindsey Cesena with 13 points each, while Brittany Smith added 12 points off the bench to go along with an 11-point showing by Maria Viola. On the boards, Viola also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go along with a three-assist showing by Smith.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 24-for-69 (34.8%) from the field to go along with an 8-for-26 (30.8%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 13-for-21 (61.9%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, William Jessup was 22-for-61 (36.1%) from the field, 2-for-12 (16.7%) from long distance, and 11-for-19 (57.9%) at the charity stripe.
With tonight's win, Corban improves to 6-4 overall and William Jessup remains winless this season at 0-12. The Warriors will return to action on Friday, December 16th, in an exhibition contest against NCAA Division I member Oregon State beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.
