Warner Pacific Holds Off Coyotes for CCC Win

PORTLAND, Ore. – Warner Pacific fought off a second half surge from College of Idaho to earn a 59-51 win over the Coyotes in the Cascade Conference season opener for both teams at C.C. Perry Gym tonight.
The host Knights (4-3, 1-0 CCC) started the game with three straight buckets and held C of I scoreless through the first 5:12 of the first period. The visiting ‘Yotes (5-4, 0-1 CCC) rallied to within 12-11 on a Diamond Mitchell layup, but WP stretched out their advantage to as many as nine toward the end of the half. Laura Geis scored a deuce for C of I on their final possession to send the teams to the locker rooms with a 30-23 score in favor of the Knights.
Kelsey Mattsen opened the scoring for WP after break to equal their largest lead of nine, but the ‘Yotes started to crawl back in the game. After Mitchell tied the game at 37-37 with another slash to the rim, Knights responded with a pair of Meaghan White buckets, and a pair of free throws each from White and Cameryn Calhoun to extend the margin to 47-39 with seven minutes left – holding on to end a four-game losing streak to The C of I.
Meaghan White dropped in a season high of 18 points, and also led WP with seven rebounds. Layne Tucker helped the Knights cause with 14 points and four steals.
Micthell and Dayna Drager scored 10 points each off the bench to pace the Coyotes.
Warner Pacific will host Eastern Oregon tomorrow night, while College of Idaho will travel across Portland to face Concordia as the opening weekend of CCC play continues.
