Scarpelli's 30 Points Propel Concordia to 81-66 Win

ASHLAND – Concordia’s offense erupted for 60 points in the second half as the Cavaliers came from behind to defeat Southern Oregon 81-66 in Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball action Thursday night at Bob Riehm Arena.
Southern Oregon falls to 10-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play with the loss, while Concordia improves to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in the CCC. Both teams return to action tomorrow, with the Raiders hosting Warner Pacific and the Cavaliers traveling to Klamath Falls to face Oregon Tech.
Concordia senior Rachel Scarpelli hit six three-pointers to score 24 second-half points as the Cavaliers pulled away for the 15-point victory. Scarpelli finished the game with eight three-pointers and 30 total points on 8-of-12 shooting to set career-high marks in both categories. Malori Dixon and Lexi Amundsen each added 15 points for the Cavaliers.
Krysten Copeland led SOU with 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting and added a team-high six rebounds in the loss. Haley Newell added 14 points for the Raiders.
Both teams struggled in the first half, as the teams combined to shoot 17-of-45 from the field and turn the ball over 25 times en route to a 23-21 halftime score. Southern Oregon held the slim margin at the break, but the Cavs opened the second half with nine straight points to take a 30-23 lead.
A Nalani Hernandez free throw ended the CU run and sparked a 12-2 SOU stretch that briefly put the Raiders back on top. The Raiders held a 41-40 lead midway through the second half, but Amundsen’s layup opened the floodgates as the Cavaliers scored 40 points in the final nine minutes of play. Scarpelli hit five threes during that stretch, and CU made 15 of 18 free throw attempts in the second half to clinch the 15-point victory.
Concordia shot 51 percent for the game, including 65.5 percent (19-of-29) in the second half. The Cavaliers connected on nine of their 17 attempts from beyond the arc. Southern Oregon finished at 42.6 percent from the field (23-of-54), including 5-of-11 from long range.
