Concordia at Linfield
McMINNVILLE, Ore.—After battling close through most of the game, the Concordia women’s basketball team got nipped at the end, losing 69-62 to Linfield on Wednesday.
Neither team led by more than six through three quarters of the game, while the game featured 11 lead changes and 6 ties overall.
Concordia (3-7) went up for the last time in the game when Kayla Bustos converted a three-point play to make it 56-54 with 5:59 left to play.
Unfortunately for the Cavs, Linfield (5-2) followed with a 12-2 run to take the game’s largest lead at 66-58 with 1:23 remaining.
Still, the Cavs responded well with back-to-back jumpers from Gabi Beyer and Grace Cappleman to cut the lead to four. Bustos then gave the ball back to the Cavs with a big rebound with 39 seconds left.
However, nothing came of the Cavs’ next possession and Linfield made their free throws to seal the win.
Despite the loss, Concordia played a solid game statistically with four players in double-digits in scoring. Senior Courtney May led the group with 18 points off 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Besides May, Cappleman scored 14 for the Cavs, while Megan Padilla added 12 and Bustos put in 10. Cappleman also tied for the game-high with eight rebounds.
As a team, Concordia posted quality shooting from the three-point line, going 6-of-14 on the night. The Cavs also recorded an 11-8 advantage in offensive rebounds in the game.
Linfield, on the other hand, got to the line eight more times than the Cavs and took home a 22-14 advantage in free throws made.
Individually, Gretchen Owens led Linfield with 25 points and eight rebounds, while Kaely Maltman and Katelyn Henson each scored in double-figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively.
Next up, Concordia returns home for a game against Pacific Lutheran on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. Last year, Concordia beat PLU 73-68 on the road.
