Concordia Scores Six Runs in the First Inning, Defeats Corban 8-1

LEWISTON, Idaho – Concordia University finished a 2-0 day at the Red Lion Inn Tournament by scoring six runs in the first inning as the Cavaliers earned an 8-1 victory over Corban at Harris Field.

Josh O’Gorman picked up the win for Concordia in his first start of the season, going seven shutout innings while striking out seven and allowing four hits and two walks. Nate Hiebert took the loss for Corban, lasting only two innings while giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits with one walk.

Odie Hollingshed reached base on a fielding error to open the bottom of the first inning for the Cavaliers, and he advanced to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. Jon Houts grounded out to the shortstop for the first out of the inning, but Hollingshed came in to score the Cavs’ first run on the play.

Riley Tubbs singled to the right side with one out and came in to score on Sean Myrom’s double to center field. Tommy Whalen brought Myrom home with an RBI single down the left field line. Whalen advanced to third on Brady Miletich’s single down the leftfield line, and Miletich advanced to second on the throw to put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out.

Young drove a base hit up the middle to bring home both runners for Concordia, and after Matt Zapppoli grounded out to second base and Danny Brown walked, Hollingshed reached base for the second time in the inning with an RBI single through the right side. Houts grounded out to second to end the inning, but the damage was done as Concordia held a six run lead.

The Cavs scored again in the sixth inning when Houts reached base on a single up the middle, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the cathcher, and scored on Tubbs’ single to left field.

Corban scored its only run in the top of the eighth. Sage Poland pinch-hit and led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to third on Steven Blum’s single to right field and came around to score on Alex Bost’s single to right.

Concordia scored its final run and fourth unearned run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Rodriguez led off with a single through the left side, advanced to second when Mike Cero reached on a fielding error, got to third on Houts’ fielder’s choice and came around to score on a passed ball.

Tubbs and Myrom each finished 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Whalen went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Matt Hamlin was the only Corban player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 in the game.

Zac Manor pitched one inning for Concordia, yielding the Warriors’ lone run on two hits with a walk in the frame. Jared Young finished the game for the Cavaliers, striking out one batter while allowing one hit.

Corban finished with one run on seven hits with five errors in the contest. Concordia scored eight runs on 12 hits with two errors.

Concordia returns to action tomorrow morning, when the Cavaliers face Lewis-Clark State in a rematch of yesterday’s 9-2 loss to the Warriors.
