Corban Defeats College of Idaho in Overtime, Williams Earns Career Win #200
BOX SCORE
CALDWELL, Idaho – Twelfth-year head coach Terry Williams became the first coach in Corban's women's basketball history to register 200 career wins, as the Warriors extended their winning streak to three games with a 77-75 overtime victory over The College of Idaho Saturday inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
"I really do not keep track of wins and losses," said Williams. "It is more about the character and type of players that we have brought through the program over my tenure as head coach. I feel that we have built a very well-respected program in the conference and the wins come along with that."
Leading by three points (67-64) with 21 seconds left in regulation, Corban senior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) was called for her fifth and final foul on a three-point attempt by C of I's Nicole Gall. After Gall made all three free throws to tie the game at 67-all, neither team could score again sending the game into an extra period.
Just over midway through the overtime period, junior Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) was whistled for her fifth and final foul with Corban trailing by two points (71-69). After Steigleman's foul, Corban used a game-closing 8-4 run that was capped by an old-fashion three-point play by senior Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.) with three seconds left to give Corban a slim two-point advantage (77-75). Following a timeout by The College of Idaho, Gall attempted to dribble coast-to-coast and could not get up a good shot sending the Warriors to its first season sweep over the host Lady Coyotes since the 2005-06 season.
Sophomore Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) led the Warriors in scoring with a team-high 25 points on 11-for-19 shooting from the field, while Steigleman added 21 points and sophomore Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) chipped in with 11 points in 40 minutes of action. On the boards, junior Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to go along with a team-high four assists by Steigleman.
In the opening period, Corban came out and scored the first five points before The College of Idaho used a 9-0 run en route to securing a four-point lead (9-5) following a Gall three-pointer at the 15:48 mark. The host Lady 'Yotes would extend their lead to as much as 10 points (40-30) thanks to a Meghan Hughes fast break jumper in the paint with 52 seconds left before Corban settled for an eight-point half time deficit (40-32).
The second half would see The College of Idaho quickly extend its lead to nine points (45-36) after a Hughes free throw at the 16:33 mark. Over the next seven-plus minutes, Corban would use a 14-5 run en route to tying the game for the first time at 50-all after a three-pointer by Tsugawa with 9:11 on the clock. The College of Idaho would then use a 12-4 run over the next three minutes en route to securing an eight-point lead (62-54) after another Gall three-pointer with 6:16 left. The visiting Warriors used a never-say-die attitude and quieted the C of I crowd with a 13-0 run over a span of five-plus minutes to secure a five-point lead (67-62) with 88 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately, Gall would knock down a jumper 18 seconds later to pull The College of Idaho within three points (67-64) to set up the frantic final minute of regulation and overtime period.
Gall would lead all players in scoring with a game-high 30 points in her final home game in a C of I uniform, while Nicole Bruce was the only other College of Idaho player in double figures with 13 points. Bruce and Tyra Rickman grabbed a game-high tying 10 rebounds each, while Gall handed out a game-high seven assists for The College of Idaho.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 31-for-69 (44.9%) from the field to go along with a 6-for-19 (31.6%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 9-for-14 (64.3%) performance from the free throw line. On the other hand, The College of Idaho was a combined 27-for-68 (39.7%) from the field, 8-for-19 (42.1%) from long distance, and 13-for-20 (65.0%) at the charity stripe.
