BOX SCORE

LEWISTON, Idaho –
Concordia University scored three runs in the fifth innings and two more in the sixth and seventh to retake the lead and pull away to an 8-4 win over College of Idaho in the final game of the 2011 Red Lion Tournament on Sunday.

Brett Ferguson earned his first win of the season for Concordia (3-2), throwing six innings in relief of starter Josh Saio, who lasted three shutout innings in his second start of the season. Todd Griffiths took the loss for College of Idaho (1-3), giving up four runs on seven hits in five innings for the Coyotes.

The Cavaliers got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second, when Jon Houts scored on Curt Cosby’s double to left field. College of Idaho took a brief lead a few innings later in the top of the fifth, as Ferguson hit a pair of batters and both came around to score on Jordan Lanman’s double down the right field line.

Concordia regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Tanner Larson opened the inning with a walk and Odie Hollingshed reached on a bunt single. Riley Tubbs singled to center to drive in Larson and advance Hollingshed to third, with Tubbs moving to second on the throw home. Sean Myrom hit a sacrifice fly to score Hollingshed, and Tubbs came in on Tommy Whalen’s single to left to give CU a 4-2 lead.

The Yotes pulled within one in the top of the sixth, as Izaac Garsez tripled to left center and scored on Jesse Dodd’s sacrifice fly to left.

The Cavs extended their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Matt Zappoli was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on Cosby’s sacrifice bunt. Larson walked, and a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. Hollingshed tripled to center field to put CU up 6-3.

Concordia put two more on the board in the seventh. Whalen and Jared Young hit back-to-back doubles to open the inning. Tim Reavis singled to left to advance Young to third. Danny Brown pinch-hit and hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Young and give the Cavs an 8-3 advantage.

Garsez added a home run in the top of the eighth to score College of Idaho’s fourth run, but that would be it for the Yotes in the contest.

Hollingshed and Whalen each tallied three hits for Concordia, while Tubbs and Young contributed two each. Lanman went 3-for-5 with two RBI for College of Idaho while Garsez finished a double shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Concordia returns to action on Feb. 18, when the Cavs host Pacific Lutheran in the first game of the Cascade-Northwest Challenge at Wilsonville H.S. at 5 p.m.
