Izaac Garsez clubbed two homers in the Game 2 win
LEWISTON, Idaho - Joshua Orr tossed a six-hit shutout in the opener, while Izaac Garsez hit two home runs and knocked in five in the nightcap, as The College of Idaho swept a doubleheader from Dickinson State, 4-0 and 11-3, at Harris Field.
The wins for the No. 21 ranked Coyotes (7-3) completed a perfect 6-0 weekend road trip – heading into their NAIA West opener next weekend against No. 10 ranked British Columbia.
Orr kept the Blue Hawks (0-2) off balance in Game 1, striking out seven in the complete game effort. The Yotes tallied an unearned run in the first, then added a pair in the second inning – one on a Gavin Gamboa RBI triple, followed by a Cody Spencer RBI single. The C of I would tack on an insurance run in the sixth on a Todd Griffiths run scoring double – as the Coyotes made the most of their five hits off two DSU pitchers.
Game 2 saw the Yotes jump out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a Tanner Hodges two-run single, with Garsez launching a two-run shot in the third to put The C of I up 4-0. The Coyotes would bust the game open in the fifth, as Garsez blasted a three-run homer and Jarel Lewis added a two-out, two-run single.
Mitch Dame got the win, allowing three hits and one run in five innings of work, fanning five. Griffiths, Garsez, and Hodges each had two of the Yotes 13 hits.
Derrick Gunderson had four hits in the doubleheader for the Blue Hawks, but preseason All-America third-baseman Kevin Park went 0-for-6 with three strikeouts.
The C of I meets UBC next weekend in Caldwell – opening the 32-game NAIA West schedule. Saturday’s doubleheader is set for Noon, with Sunday’s twinbill starts at 11 a.m.
