CU's Jared Young George Fox Earns Twinbill Sweep of Concordia 2/26/2011 5:51:43 PM NEWBERG, Ore. – In a doubleheader originally scheduled to be played at the University of Portland, George Fox hosted and defeated Concordia University 7-0 in the first game and 9-3 in the second contest. George Fox 7, Concordia 0 BOX SCORE Brian Ranta pitched seven innings of scoreless ball to stifle the Cavaliers in the opener. Ranta struck out five and allowed just three hits to earn his third win of the season. The Bruins struck for two runs in both the first and second frames to stake a 4-0 lead. Sam Stahl recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to right in the fifth for a 5-0 advantage and came back in the seventh with an RBI double to right to help push the gap to 7-0. Andrew Snyder and Kyle Albertson combined to pitch the final three stanzas to complete the shutout for George Fox. The Bruins outhit the Cavs 7-5 with Dan Winterstein going 2 for 4 with four runs scored and an RBI to lead the attack. All five CU hits came from different players with Mike Cero (Portland, Ore./Westview H.S.) posting the lone extra-base hit with a double down the left-field line in the fifth. Cero, along with Jared Young (Redmond, Ore./Redmond H.S.), who reached on a fielder's choice and advanced on an Odie Hollingshed (Portland, Ore./Cleveland H.S.) single in the eighth, were the only two Cavalier baserunners to reach second base. Larsen Kohler (Soldatna, Alaska/Soldatna H.S.) took the loss for CU after allowing four runs (three earned) while pitching the first three innings. Shayne Nakata (Pearl City, Hawaii/Hanalani Schools) closed out the game for CU, retiring the final four batters, two of which by strikeout. George Fox 9, Concordia 3 BOX SCORE Sean Myrom (San Diego, Calif./Ranch Bernardo H.S.)'s home run in the first inning gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead, but the Bruins scored three in the bottom of the frame and blew the game open with six runs in the fourth as they finished the doubleheader sweep with a 9-3 victory. Steven Taft (Encinitas, Calif./San Dieguito Academy) yielded nine runs – three earned – on 10 hits in four innings pitched, taking the loss for Concordia. George Fox's Clay Gartner earned the win in relief of starter Brian Davis, throwing four innings of one-hit ball. Odie Hollingshed (Portland, Ore./Cleveland H.S.) opened the first inning with a walk and stole second. With one out, Sean Myrom (San Diego, Calif./Ranch Bernardo H.S.) homered over the left field wall to give Concordia a 2-0 lead. The lead would not last long, however, as George Fox used three hits and a CU error to take a 3-2 lead. The game remained 3-2 until the bottom of the fourth inning, when four fielding miscues led to five unearned runs. The Bruins batted around in the inning, tallying six runs on five hits to go with the four Concordia errors to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Concordia scored its final run in the eighth, when Brady Miletich (Vancouver, Wash./Heritage H.S.) scored on Jared Young (Redmond, Ore./Redmond H.S.)'s sacrifice fly after doubling to lead off the frame. Concordia finished the game with three runs on four hits with five errors. George Fox tallied nine runs on 12 hits with one error. Eric Gantenbein and Derek Aldrich each went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs for George Fox, while four different CU players each tallied one hit.
