SALEM, Ore. – With second place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings on the line, Concordia defeated Corban University for the second time this season with a 70-59 win inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center on Friday night.
 
With the win, Concordia improved to 17-8 on the season and 9-4 in CCC action while Corban fell to 14-10 overall and 9-5 in league play. Concordia defeated the Warriors 100-88 in Portland on Jan. 8.
 
A tight game through the first 10 minutes, Concordia scored seven straight points to go up 25-17 with 7:10 left in the first half only to see Corban return with a 13-6 run to cut the lead back to a single point with less than three minutes remaining. The Cavs came back with four late free throws to boost the lead to seven at the break with the score 39-32.
 
Concordia controlled the tempo in the second half after increasing their lead to double digits on a successful attempt at the line by Sarah Eischen at the 18:18 mark. Holding the Warriors to 28.9 percent shooting (11-of-38) in the second half, Concordia pushed its lead to as many as 15 points following a Courtney May jumper with two minutes left in regulation, before settling for the 11-point victory.    
 
Corban held only one lead in the game with a Katie Steigleman jumper early in the first half. The lead last 20 seconds before a May jumper gave the Cavs the advantage. The Warriors squared the contest at 16-16 on an Emily Tsugawa three with 11:21 left in the first half before being outscored 23-16 the rest of the way.
 
Five players reached double-digits in the scoring column for Concordia with May leading the way with a 15-point tally on 7-of-13 shooting. With 12 points, Freshman Sarah Letourneau posted a career high for the second straight game. Letourneau’s had a previous high of nine points against Eastern Oregon last Saturday. With a game-high 13 boards, Letourneu doubled her career best rebound total as her previous best effort was six rebounds.
Grace Cappleman also scored a career-best with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field. Rachel Scarpelli chipped in with 13 points while CU scoring leader Danielle Clauson was held to 10 points. Clauson added nine rebounds, five steals and two blocks.
 
Corban was led by Steigleman’s 17 points on 7-of-19 shooting and just 1-of-6 from three-point range. Tsugawa was the only other Warrior in double digits with 14 points. Tess Bennett corralled a team-best 11 rebounds.
 
For the game, Concordia finished with a 45.2 percent shooting rate while Corban was held to 31.9 percent from the floor.
 
Concordia returns to action on Saturday when it travels to face Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Ore. Corban will host Warner Pacific with both matches slated for a 5:30 p.m. start.
