Cavaliers Defeat Northwest Christian 64-52

EUGENE, Ore. – Concordia’s 39-17 halftime lead proved too much to overcome as the Cavaliers outlasted a late Northwest Christian’s run en route to a 64-52 Cascade Collegiate Conference women’s basketball victory Saturday night.
With the win, Concordia improves to 18-8 overall this season, 10-4 in the CCC. Northwest Christian falls to 10-15 overall, 6-9 in conference play.
The Cavaliers took a 10-point lead with 11:57 to play in the first period when Rachel Scarpelli’s layup put CU up 15-5. Concordia outscored Northwest Christian 24-12 the rest of the half in taking a 39-17 lead into the locker room. The Cavs limited Northwest Christian to 19.4 percent shooting (6-of-31) in the half, including 0-of-9 on free throws.
The teams exchanged baskets for the first 15 minutes of the second half, as Danielle Clauson’s layup put CU up 60-38 with 5:48 to play. Northwest Christian scored 14 of the next 18 points to pull within 12 at the end of regulation, but the Beacons ran out of time still trailing by 12 points.
Both teams struggled in the second half, as the Cavaliers shot 39.1 percent (9-of-23) and the Beacons shot 38.9 percent (14-of-36) in the period. Northwest Christian finished the contest under 30 percent from the field, connection on only 20 of 67 shots.
Clauson led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Scarpelli added 14 for CU, connecting on 4-of-7 shots from beyond the arc in the contest. Sarah Eischen scored seven points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Hope Williams and Sheena Alexander tied for the team lead with 15 points each for Northwest Christian. Williams tied Eischen with nine rebounds.
Concordia returns to action Feb. 11, when the Cavaliers host Northwest in a CCC game scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Northwest Christian will visit College of Idaho on the same night, tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
