Nickayla Skinner fanned 12 in Game 1 shutout of NCU
CALDWELL, Idaho - The College of Idaho opened the Cascade Conference softball season with a pair of wins over Northwest Christian, grabbing 4-0 and 6-3 victories at Symms Field.
The Coyotes (10-6, 2-0 CCC) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, as Nikki Shumway cleared the bases with a three-run double, scoring on a Kristen Haugen infield single.
It was all Nickayla Skinner would need, as the freshman tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out 12 in the win. The Beacons (5-9, 0-2) allowed just three hits in the loss - with three NCU errors leading to the four C of I runs.
Game 2 saw the visitors grab a 3-2 lead in the third on a two-run Dani Gehrke single and a Cassie Bishop base hit, but The C of I rallied, tying the score in the fifth on a Skinner RBI triple, then scoring three in the sixth - the big blow a pinch hit RBI triple from freshman Julia Henrie.
Kyla Bryant picked up the win in relief, tossing four shutout innings, allowing just two hits and four strikeouts. Skinner, Sammy Dodge, and Kalie Kurdy all had two hits for the Coyotes, who have won five in a row, while NCU got a 2-for-4 performance from Gabby Stover.
The Lady Yotes return to action tomorrow morning, hosting Corban at 11 a.m.
