British Columbia scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead, and the T-Birds extending it to 8-0 with three runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth before CU got on the board. The Cavaliers scored the final four runs of the game, but it was not enough to catch the 10th-ranked team in the nation.

Concordia finally got through in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits. Riley Tubbs opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on Tommy Whalen’s groudout. After Brady Miletich was hit by a pitch, Mike Cero reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Tubbs from third. Jared Young singled up the middle to put two on with two out, and Cameron Baker walked to load the bases. Danny Brown came through with a two-out single up the middle to score two more and pull CU within 8-3.

The Cavs’ final run came in the bottom of the ninth. Brown doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning, advanced on Tanner Larson’s groundout and scored on Odie Hollingshed’s single to center field.

BOX SCORE

Tommy Whalen hit two home runs in the contest, but the T-Birds kept adding runs to protect their slim lead in the final innings. British Columbia scored one run in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead, and then added a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings to provide just enough cushion to prevent a CU comeback.

Whalen hit his first home run of the game over the left field wall to notch CU’s first hit and run in the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning. He added another in the bottom of the sixth, this one clearing the fence in left-center. Each of his homers pulled CU within one of UBC, 2-1 in the fourth and then 3-2 in the sixth.

British Columbia’s final insurance run in the seventh proved to be the decisive run in the game. Sean Pisarski tripled down the left field line and scored on Andrew Firth’s suicide squeeze bunt to put UBC up 4-2. But Concordia had a chance in the bottom of the seventh. Jon Houts doubled to right to open the inning, and Danny Brown followed with a single to center that advanced Houts to third. Odie Hollingshed pinch hit and bounced into a double play, scoring the run but wiping the other runner off the table and giving the Cavs two outs in the inning. Mike Dickman struck out to end the game as CU fell short.

Miles Varweel pitched six innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on four hits. Shawn Hetherington picked up the final three outs to get the save. Josh O’Gorman took the loss, throwing five innings and yielding two runs on four hits. Jared Young pitched the final two frames.
